Job description
The Opportunity Worcester is a city with a deep-rooted history in craftsmanship and manufacturing, from its world-famous porcelain to its thriving modern engineering sector. We are seeking an innovative Design & Technology Teacher to join our department. This role involves teaching across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4, inspiring students to move from initial sketches to high-quality finished products. You will guide them through the iterative design process, helping them solve real-world problems using a variety of materials and modern technologies. The Department You will be based in a well-equipped D&T suite featuring dedicated workshops for woodworking and metalworking, alongside modern CAD/CAM facilities. The department is equipped with 3D printers, laser cutters, and industry-standard software (such as TechSoft Design and 2D Design), allowing students to bridge the gap between traditional craft and digital manufacturing. You will be supported by a highly skilled D&T Technician who manages material stock, maintains machinery, and assists with the preparation of student projects. We prioritize a "design-thinking" curriculum, encouraging students to consider sustainability, ergonomics, and the ethical impact of the products they create. Core Responsibilities Planning and delivering practical and theoretical lessons across a range of disciplines, which may include Product Design, Resistant Materials, or Systems and Control. Managing a safe and productive workshop environment, ensuring all students are trained in the correct use of hand tools and machinery in line with DATA (Design and Technology Association) health and safety standards. Preparing Key Stage 4 students for GCSE Design & Technology, with a heavy focus on the Non-Examined Assessment (NEA) portfolio and practical outcome. Teaching the theoretical principles of material properties, manufacturing processes, and the work of influential designers. Fostering a culture of innovation by leading extracurricular clubs, such as "STEM Challenge" or "Greenpower" electric car racing. The Successful Candidate We are looking for a "maker" at heart who can inspire students with their own passion for design. Requirements include: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a degree in Design & Technology, Product Design, Engineering, or a related field. Valid Health & Safety certification for the use of workshop machinery (or a willingness to undergo training). A strong understanding of the iterative design process and the ability to support students in developing high-quality portfolios. Excellent ICT skills, particularly in the use of CAD/CAM software to enhance student outcomes. Why Join Us? A school that recognizes the critical role of D&T in developing the engineers and designers of the future. Access to a structured CPD program focused on both technical skill upskilling and the latest pedagogical developments in STEM education. A collaborative and social staff culture that values practical expertise and creative problem-solving. Located in a beautiful cathedral city with excellent transport links across the West Midlands and stunning views of the Malvern Hills. How to Apply Please submit your current CV to begin the application process for this Design & Technology Teacher position.
