Job description
The Opportunity Braintree is a town that perfectly illustrates the intersection of historic market traditions and modern sustainable development. We are seeking an enthusiastic Geography Teacher to join our forward-thinking department. This role is designed for an educator who can bring the curriculum to life, helping students understand the complex relationships between human populations and the physical environment. From investigating local urban planning to analyzing global climate shifts, you will empower our students to become informed global citizens in a rapidly changing world. The Geography Department The Geography department is a vibrant and highly collaborative team that places fieldwork and inquiry at the heart of learning. We believe that Geography is a living subject, and our classrooms are equipped with modern digital tools and GIS technology to help students visualize and manipulate spatial data. You will join a department that values intellectual curiosity and supports its staff through shared planning and a commitment to reducing unnecessary administrative tasks. Our curriculum is designed to be inclusive and challenging, covering a wide range of human and physical topics that resonate with our diverse student body. With a strong uptake at GCSE and a growing A-Level cohort, we have a proven track record of helping students transition to Geography and Environmental Science degrees at leading universities. Main Duties and Responsibilities As a Geography Teacher, you will be responsible for fostering a deep understanding of the planet and its people. Your responsibilities will include: Instructional Excellence: Planning and delivering high-quality, academically rigorous lessons across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. You will prepare students for GCSE examinations by developing their ability to interpret maps, analyze data, and evaluate complex environmental issues. A-Level Specialism: For candidates with the appropriate expertise, there is the opportunity to teach at Key Stage 5, guiding students through advanced topics such as carbon and water cycles, global systems, and place-based identities. Fieldwork Leadership: Planning and leading essential fieldwork experiences. We utilize the diverse landscapes of Essex and the East of England to ensure students gain hands-on experience in data collection and geographical inquiry. Digital Innovation: Integrating Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and other digital tools into the classroom to help students visualize and manipulate spatial data. Global Citizenship: Encouraging students to engage with contemporary issues such as sustainability, hazard management, and international development, fostering a sense of ethical responsibility toward the planet. Literacy and Numeracy: Supporting students in developing the high-level descriptive and statistical skills required to excel in geographical report writing and data analysis. Person Specification The successful candidate will be an articulate and enthusiastic subject specialist with a passion for the natural and social sciences. You should possess: Academic and Professional Credentials: A degree in Geography or a related field and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). We welcome applications from both experienced practitioners and Early Career Teachers (ECTs). Subject Authority: A strong command of both physical and human geography, with the ability to explain complex cause-and-effect relationships with clarity and enthusiasm. Pedagogical Skill: A range of teaching strategies that promote active learning, from case-study-led debates to practical fieldwork and land-use mapping. Communication and Rapport: The ability to build strong, professional relationships with students, inspiring them to achieve their best through high expectations and a supportive classroom atmosphere. Drive for Excellence: A proactive approach to professional growth and a desire to contribute to the overall success and culture of the school and the wider Braintree community. Why Join Our School? Working at our school in Braintree offers a rewarding career within a supportive and community-focused professional environment. Benefits include: Professional Investment: A comprehensive CPD programme designed to support your career aspirations, including internal mentoring and access to external subject-specialist training. Collaborative Environment: A staffroom culture where teamwork is the norm and where your ideas for curriculum design and field trip locations are genuinely valued. Facilities and Resources: Modern classrooms with excellent digital infrastructure and a department well-stocked with the latest geographical journals and mapping tools. Location: Benefit from working in a growing town with excellent transport links to both London and the scenic Essex coast, providing a variety of fieldwork opportunities right on your doorstep.
