Job description
The Opportunity Located on the vibrant border of East London and Essex, Havering offers a unique backdrop for historical study, blending deep-rooted local heritage with the rapid expansion of the capital. We are seeking a passionate History Teacher to join our dedicated Humanities faculty. Our school is committed to helping students understand the complexities of the past to better navigate the challenges of the future. This role is ideal for an educator who can bring historical narratives to life, fostering a sense of critical inquiry and a genuine love for the subject in a diverse and ambitious student community. The History Department The History department is a high-performing and collaborative team that views the study of the past as essential for developing empathetic and analytical citizens. We operate in a well-resourced environment where teachers are encouraged to use a variety of media, primary sources, and digital archives to create an immersive learning experience. Our curriculum is broad and inclusive, covering a wide range of eras and regions to ensure students see themselves reflected in the stories we tell. We have a strong track record of success at GCSE and a growing, enthusiastic cohort at A-Level. You will join a department that values intellectual curiosity and supports its staff through shared planning and a commitment to reducing unnecessary administrative tasks, allowing you to focus on what matters most: high-quality teaching and learning. Main Duties and Responsibilities As a History Teacher, you will be responsible for guiding students through the vast landscape of human experience. Your responsibilities will include: Instructional Excellence: Planning and delivering engaging and academically rigorous lessons across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. You will prepare students for GCSE examinations by developing their ability to evaluate evidence and construct persuasive historical arguments. A-Level Specialism: For those with appropriate experience, there is the opportunity to teach at Key Stage 5, guiding students through advanced historical concepts and independent research projects. Historical Inquiry: Teaching students how to analyze primary and secondary sources with a critical eye, helping them identify bias, perspective, and the nuances of historical interpretation. Curriculum Enrichment: Contributing to the development of our "knowledge-rich" schemes of work. We encourage our staff to bring their own historical interests into the classroom, whether that is medieval power struggles, civil rights movements, or local industrial history. Literacy and Communication: Supporting students in developing high-level writing skills, ensuring they can articulate complex ideas with clarity and precision. Beyond the Classroom: Leading or supporting extracurricular initiatives such as history clubs, debate societies, or organizing field trips to local heritage sites and London’s world-class museums. Person Specification The successful candidate will be an articulate and enthusiastic subject specialist with a deep commitment to the humanities. You should possess: Academic and Professional Credentials: A degree in History or a closely related discipline and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). We welcome applications from both experienced practitioners and Early Career Teachers (ECTs). Subject Authority: A strong command of historical facts and the ability to explain complex cause-and-effect relationships in a way that is accessible and exciting for all learners. Pedagogical Skill: A range of teaching strategies that promote active learning, from structured debates and role-play to high-level source analysis and essay planning. Communication and Rapport: The ability to build strong, professional relationships with students, inspiring them to achieve their best through a combination of high expectations and support. Drive for Excellence: A proactive approach to professional growth and a desire to contribute to the overall success and culture of the school. Why Join Our School? Working at our school in Havering offers a rewarding career within a supportive and forward-thinking professional community. Benefits include: Professional Investment: A comprehensive CPD programme designed to support your career aspirations, including internal mentoring and access to external subject-specialist training. Collaborative Environment: A staffroom culture where teamwork is the norm and where your ideas for curriculum design and student engagement are genuinely valued. Facilities and Resources: Modern classrooms with excellent digital infrastructure and a well-stocked library that supports independent historical research. Location: Benefit from a location that offers the best of both worlds—easy access to the cultural heart of London and the green spaces of the Essex countryside.
