Job description
The Opportunity York is a city where ancient history meets cutting-edge bioscience and research. We are seeking an inspiring Biology Teacher to join our highly successful Science faculty. In a city that is home to world-class laboratories and a thriving biotech sector, we want an educator who can connect the classroom to the real world. From the complexities of cellular biology to the global challenges of ecology and conservation, you will empower our students to understand the living world and their place within it. The Biology Department The Biology department is a flagship area of the school, boasting a suite of modern, purpose-built laboratories and a dedicated team of specialist technicians. We believe that Biology is best taught through discovery, and our curriculum is designed around a strong core of practical, hands-on experimentation. You will join a collaborative and intellectually curious team that values shared expertise. The subject is immensely popular at both GCSE and A-Level, with many of our students successfully gaining places at Russell Group universities to study Medicine, Veterinary Science, and Biological Sciences. We offer a supportive environment for staff, including comprehensive schemes of work and a commitment to maintaining a healthy work-life balance through efficient shared planning. Main Duties and Responsibilities As a Biology Teacher, you will be responsible for nurturing the next generation of scientists and healthcare professionals. Your responsibilities will include: Instructional Excellence: Planning and delivering high-quality, engaging lessons across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. You will prepare students for GCSE Biology, focusing on core concepts such as cell biology, infection and response, and inheritance. A-Level Specialism: For candidates with appropriate expertise, there is the opportunity to lead the delivery of A-Level Biology, guiding students through advanced topics like gene technology, homeostatic mechanisms, and biochemical pathways. Practical Mastery: Designing and overseeing a wide range of biological investigations. You will help students develop the high-level microscope skills and experimental techniques required for further study and industry. Curriculum Innovation: Contributing to the development of our biology curriculum, ensuring it incorporates the latest scientific breakthroughs and local ecological contexts, such as the diverse habitats of the Vale of York. Literacy and Numeracy: Supporting students in mastering technical scientific terminology and the statistical skills necessary for data analysis and evaluation. Extracurricular Enrichment: Leading or supporting biology-focused initiatives, such as the Biology Challenge, medical society (MedSoc), or local field study trips to explore biodiversity. Person Specification The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic subject advocate with a deep-seated passion for the natural world. You should possess: Academic and Professional Credentials: A degree in Biology, Biomedical Science, or a related field, and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). We welcome applications from experienced teachers and Early Career Teachers (ECTs) alike. Subject Authority: A broad and deep understanding of biological principles, with the ability to communicate complex processes—from DNA replication to ecosystem dynamics—with clarity and excitement. Pedagogical Skill: The ability to use a variety of teaching strategies to make abstract biological concepts concrete and accessible to students of all abilities. Communication and Rapport: Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to foster a classroom environment where students feel confident to ask questions and explore new ideas. Professional Drive: A proactive approach to your own professional development and a commitment to maintaining the high academic standards of the school. Why Join Our School? Working at our school in York offers a rewarding career within a historic and culturally rich professional environment. Benefits include: Professional Investment: A tailored CPD programme that includes opportunities for subject-specific training and leadership development. Collaborative Culture: A staffroom that values teamwork and provides a clear framework for professional support and workload management. Exceptional Facilities: Work in modern laboratories with high-quality equipment and access to our school’s own outdoor learning spaces and gardens. Location: Benefit from working in one of the UK’s most beautiful and liveable cities, with excellent rail links to London and Edinburgh and easy access to the North York Moors and the coast.
