Job description

Assistant Director of Community Services - Charitable Provider

Location: Hybrid (UK) – with regular national travel to all locations

Salary: Up to £75,000 per annum plus benefits package

About the Opportunity

Compass Associates are proud to be partnering with Royal Star & Garter to recruit an Assistant Director of Community Services at a pivotal time in the charity’s development.

This role sits at the heart of the organisation’s five-year strategy, supporting the transformation of community-based services into a scalable, evidence-led, national model of support for the UK’s Armed Forces community.

The postholder will lead the design, development and delivery of innovative community programmes that expand reach, improve outcomes, and ensure services remain responsive, impactful and sustainable.

The Role

The Assistant Director of Community Services will lead the national Community Services programme, ensuring the development and delivery of innovative, high-quality and scalable services for veterans and their partners across the UK.

Working closely with the Director of Care & Wellbeing, the postholder will shape and implement community-based models of care and support, driving both expansion and continuous improvement across a diverse portfolio of services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and delivery of the community services strategy
  • Design and implement multi-option service models, enabling scalable, evidence-led provision
  • Develop innovation pathways from design through to pilot, evaluation and scale
  • Benchmark services and ensure continuous improvement aligned with veteran needs
  • Provide visible, values-based leadership across all community services
  • Lead and develop multidisciplinary teams including innovation, clinical leadership and data functions
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, learning and continuous improvement
  • Oversee therapy access, wellbeing outreach, community hubs and end-of-life pathways
  • Build strong partnerships with NHS organisations, hospices, commissioners and veterans’ groups
  • Represent Royal Star & Garter nationally across sector networks and events
  • Support funding applications and service development bids through evidence and evaluation

About You

  • Senior leadership experience in health, social care or community services
  • Proven experience in service development, transformation or innovation
  • Strong understanding of governance, safeguarding and multi-agency working
  • Experience working within or alongside regulated services
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary or cross-functional teams
  • Strong analytical mindset with experience using data and evaluation to shape services

Desirable Experience

  • Experience in veteran-focused, charitable or community health settings
  • Track record of leading pilots, transformation or service redesign
  • Master’s level qualification or equivalent professional expertise

Why apply?

This is a rare opportunity to shape the future of community-based care and support for the UK’s Armed Forces community. The role offers the chance to lead national transformation, build innovative service models, and make a lasting impact on the lives of veterans and their families.
