We are seeking a Workshop Manager to lead and oversee the end‑to‑end repair and refurbishment operations for a major public transport technology programme. This role provides strategic and operational leadership to the workshop organisation, ensuring the effective repair of assets, strong performance management, and high-quality technical outputs. The Workshop Manager will guide a multi‑tiered team comprising workshop team leaders, repair engineers, technical specialists, and administrative staff, as well as act as the primary management point for the logistics subcontractors.

Key duties include:

  • Provide overall leadership of the workshop organisation, ensuring efficient, high‑quality repair and refurbishment of all returned assets and components.
  • Oversee team leaders, technical specialists, repair engineers, stores and logistics interfaces, ensuring workflows, processes, and standards are consistently met.
  • Ensure adherence to quality standards, repair procedures, safety requirements, and contractual KPIs, including turnaround times and technical compliance.
  • Serve as the senior escalation point for complex technical or operational issues within the workshop environment.
  • Manage the planning and prioritisation of repairs, resources, skills allocation, and capacity across multiple workshop streams.
  • Maintain effective governance over spares availability, stock control coordination, and alignment with stores and logistics teams.
  • Lead workforce management activities, including performance oversight of team leaders, competencies development, and promoting a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement.
  • Act as the primary point of leadership for the logistics subcontractors, ensuring SLA compliance, coordinated delivery, and effective alignment with the workshop organisation.
  • Support cost estimation, project variation assessments, and future capacity planning in collaboration with senior management.
  • Provide regular reporting on workshop performance, quality metrics, MTTR trends, risks and mitigations, and improvement opportunities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in engineering, electronics, telecommunications, industrial management, or a related discipline.
  • Significant experience leading technical workshop operations or repair centres, ideally within transport, technology, or industrial service environments.
  • Strong understanding of electronic, electro‑mechanical and PC‑based equipment repair processes.
  • Proven leadership experience managing multi‑disciplinary teams, including team leaders, engineers, technical specialists, and administrative roles.
  • Experience with performance management, process governance, quality assurance, and continuous improvement.
  • Strong capability in resource planning, workflow optimisation, and managing multiple repair streams.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and meet contractual KPIs, including MTTR, quality standards, and compliance requirements.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and strong communication skills, including leadership of subcontractor relationships.
  • Ability to operate effectively in high‑volume, fast‑paced, and quality‑critical operational environments.

Desirable Experience:

  • Experience working in large‑scale transport technology or fare collection environments.
  • Knowledge of quality management frameworks relevant to workshop operations.
  • Experience with spares planning, logistics coordination, and stock control systems.
  • Background in diagnostic engineering, root‑cause analysis, or development of test/repair methodologies.

Benefits

  • Holidays: 25 days per annum + 8 days bank holidays (options to buy/sell days)
  • 37.5 hour working week
  • Pension – 4% employee and 4% employer
  • Private medical insurance (including dental & optical)
  • Life assurance
  • Income protection
  • Employee assistance programs
  • Flexible/remote working options
  • Charitable initiatives
  • Social events (formal & informal)
  • Learning and development programs
  • Innovative & collaborative work environment
