Job description

Location: Wigan, Greater Manchester

Salary: MPS/UPS (Commensurate with experience)

Contract: Full-Time, Permanent

Overview of the School

Situated in a town famous for its industrial heritage, its legendary contributions to Northern Soul, and its fierce sporting pride, our school is a cornerstone of the Wigan community. We are a high-achieving secondary school dedicated to breaking down barriers and ensuring that every student—regardless of their starting point—develops a sophisticated command of the English language. We believe that literacy is the ultimate engine of social mobility, and we are looking for a passionate English Teacher to join our vibrant faculty. In this role, you will empower students to find their voices through the study of diverse texts and the mastery of creative and analytical writing.

The English Department

The English Department is a collaborative and high-energy environment where pedagogical innovation is celebrated. We are a team of bibliophiles and linguists who believe that English is the most vital subject in the curriculum. Our faculty is exceptionally well-resourced, featuring dedicated classrooms equipped with interactive technology and a close working relationship with our professional school library.

We offer a curriculum that balances the "greats" of the Western canon with contemporary, diverse voices that reflect the world our students live in today. With a high uptake at A-Level (English Literature and English Language), we have a proven track record of helping students secure places at top-tier universities. You will join a department that prioritizes "collaborative planning," meaning you will have the support of your peers to design high-impact lessons while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

As an English Teacher, you will be the guardian of literacy and critical thinking for our students. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Instructional Excellence: Planning and delivering high-quality, engaging lessons across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 (GCSE English Language and Literature). You will have the opportunity to teach A-Level classes, guiding students through complex literary criticism and linguistic analysis.

  • Curriculum Craftsmanship: Contributing to a "knowledge-rich" curriculum. We encourage our teachers to bring their own literary passions into the classroom, whether that is a love for Shakespearean tragedy, Post-Colonial poetry, or the nuances of political rhetoric.

  • Analytical Mastery: Teaching students how to deconstruct texts with precision. You will move them beyond basic comprehension to a deep understanding of authorial intent, structural choices, and historical context.

  • Writing Development: Fostering a love for writing in all its forms. You will help students master everything from formal persuasive essays to imaginative creative writing, ensuring they can communicate with clarity and flair.

  • Data-Informed Progress: Utilizing the school’s tracking systems to ensure no student falls behind. You will provide the kind of detailed, high-level feedback that helps students refine their arguments and elevate their grade boundaries.

  • Extracurricular Literacy: Leading initiatives that celebrate the written and spoken word, such as a Debate Club, Creative Writing workshops, or organizing theatre trips to the Lowry or the Royal Exchange.

Person Specification

The successful candidate will be an articulate and enthusiastic subject specialist who believes in the transformative power of English. You should possess:

  • Academic and Professional Credentials: A degree in English Literature, Language, or a related field, and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). We warmly welcome applications from both experienced practitioners and ambitious Early Career Teachers (ECTs).

  • Subject Authority: A deep love for reading and a sophisticated understanding of English grammar and literary theory.

  • Pedagogical Skill: The ability to make complex texts accessible and exciting for a diverse range of learners, using a variety of strategies to engage even the most reluctant readers.

  • Communication: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to inspire students and build strong relationships with parents and colleagues.

  • Drive for Excellence: A commitment to the school’s mission of raising aspirations and achieving the best possible outcomes for the young people of Wigan.

Why Join Our School?

Working at our school in Wigan offers a rewarding career within a supportive and community-focused environment. Benefits include:

  • Professional Investment: A bespoke CPD programme that includes internal mentoring, external courses, and opportunities for leadership development within a successful Multi-Academy Trust.

  • A Collegiate Culture: Work in a staffroom where ideas are shared, successes are celebrated, and wellbeing is a genuine priority.

  • Facilities: Modern, light-filled classrooms and a school-wide commitment to reducing unnecessary administrative burdens on teachers.

  • Community Impact: The chance to make a real difference in a town with a strong identity and a community that deeply values its local schools.
