Job description
Location: Earley, Reading, Berkshire Job Title: Behaviour Mentor School Type: Secondary School with Sixth Form (KS3–KS5) Pay Rate: £95–£125 per day (dependent on experience) Contract Type: Full-time, long-term, term-time only Start Date: Immediate or by agreement Role Overview We are seeking a committed, reflective, and emotionally intelligent Behaviour Mentor to join a well-respected secondary school with sixth form provision in Earley, Reading . This role is designed for individuals who are passionate about supporting young people with behavioural, emotional, and social challenges and who are motivated to make a long-lasting difference within an educational setting. As a Behaviour Mentor, you will work closely with students who may struggle to manage their behaviour, emotions, or engagement with learning. Many of the pupils supported in this role experience challenges such as anxiety, low self-esteem, emotional dysregulation, or difficulties with peer relationships. Some may also have SEMH needs, ADHD, or attachment-related difficulties. This role requires a high level of emotional resilience, consistency, and empathy. You will act as a trusted adult, helping students develop self-awareness, emotional regulation, and positive behaviour strategies that will support them throughout their education and beyond. Purpose of the Role The core purpose of the Behaviour Mentor role is to remove barriers to learning by supporting students’ emotional wellbeing and behaviour. You will work proactively to prevent behavioural issues and reactively to support students during challenging moments. The school is committed to inclusive education and adopts a trauma-informed, restorative approach to behaviour management. Behaviour Mentors are central to this approach, helping students understand their behaviour, take responsibility, and develop healthier coping mechanisms. Key Responsibilities As a Behaviour Mentor in Earley, your responsibilities will include: Providing 1:1 behavioural mentoring for identified students Delivering small group interventions focusing on emotional regulation, resilience, confidence, and social skills Supporting students in lessons to promote engagement, focus, and positive behaviour Assisting students during transitions, break times, and lunch periods Supporting students experiencing emotional distress or behavioural dysregulation De-escalating challenging situations calmly and professionally Supporting reintegration following fixed-term exclusions or extended absence Contributing to behaviour support plans, risk assessments, and intervention strategies Working collaboratively with teaching staff, SENCOs, pastoral teams, and senior leaders Monitoring and recording behavioural progress and outcomes Maintaining clear, professional boundaries and upholding safeguarding procedures The School Environment Located in Earley , this school serves a diverse and engaged community and is known for its strong academic performance and excellent pastoral care. Students You Will Support Students supported by the Behaviour Mentor may: Struggle with emotional regulation or anxiety Display disruptive or withdrawn behaviour in lessons Have SEMH needs, ADHD, or attachment-related challenges Experience difficulties with peer relationships Be at risk of exclusion or disengagement from education Your role is to help these students develop confidence, resilience, and the emotional skills needed to succeed within a mainstream school environment. Who This Role Is Ideal For This role is well-suited to individuals who: Have experience working with young people in education, youth work, or care Are calm, patient, and emotionally resilient Can build strong, positive relationships Are confident managing challenging behaviour in a supportive manner Are interested in long-term careers in education, psychology, counselling, or pastoral leadership Graduates in psychology, education, criminology, or social sciences are particularly encouraged to apply, as are individuals with experience in mentoring, coaching, or support work.
