As a Behaviour Mentor, you will support pupils who may struggle with emotional regulation, engagement, and behaviour in a mainstream school environment. Many of the students you work with may present with challenging behaviour as a result of anxiety, low self-esteem, trauma, or unmet social and emotional needs. You will act as a key adult , helping students feel safe, understood, and supported within the school environment. The school places a strong emphasis on early intervention and believes that behaviour is a form of communication. Key Responsibilities As a Behaviour Mentor in Tilehurst, your responsibilities will include: Providing 1:1 mentoring for students with behavioural, emotional, or social needs Delivering small group interventions focused on emotional regulation, confidence-building, and social skills Supporting students in lessons to improve focus, participation, and behaviour Working with pupils during transitions, break times, and lunch periods Supporting students during moments of emotional dysregulation De-escalating challenging behaviour calmly and professionally Supporting pupils returning from fixed-term exclusions or behaviour-related incidents Assisting with the implementation of behaviour support plans and intervention strategies Working closely with teachers, pastoral staff, SENCOs, and senior leaders Monitoring progress and maintaining accurate behaviour records Upholding safeguarding procedures and professional boundaries The School Environment This secondary school in Tilehurst serves a diverse local community and is known for its strong pastoral care and commitment to inclusion. The school promotes a calm, structured, and respectful environment where students are encouraged to take responsibility for their behaviour while being supported to understand and manage their emotions. The leadership team is approachable and supportive, recognising the importance of Behaviour Mentors within the wider school structure. Staff wellbeing is prioritised, and Behaviour Mentors receive guidance, training, and regular feedback to support their development. The school adopts restorative and trauma-informed approaches , focusing on long-term behaviour change rather than short-term sanctions. Students You Will Support Students supported by the Behaviour Mentor may: Display challenging or disruptive behaviour in lessons Experience emotional regulation difficulties or anxiety Have SEMH needs, ADHD, or attachment-related challenges Struggle with peer relationships or authority figures Be at risk of exclusion or disengagement from education Your role is to help these students develop the skills, confidence, and emotional awareness needed to succeed within a mainstream school setting. Essential Requirements Experience working with children or young people Strong communication and interpersonal skills Ability to remain calm under pressure Commitment to safeguarding and child protection Willingness to undertake relevant training and checks Desirable Experience Previous Behaviour Mentor or Teaching Assistant experience SEMH, alternative provision, or PRU background Understanding of trauma-informed or restorative practices Relevant qualifications or training What the School Offers Competitive daily pay with long-term stability Comprehensive induction and ongoing CPD Supportive leadership and pastoral teams Clear progression opportunities within education A positive, inclusive, and respectful working environment Why This Role Makes a Difference As a Behaviour Mentor in Tilehurst, your role will have a direct and meaningful impact on students’ lives.
