Job description
The Opportunity Are you a storyteller with a passion for the past, a critical thinker who can challenge established narratives, and an educator who believes that understanding where we came from is the key to shaping where we are going? We are seeking an intellectually curious and engaging History Teacher to join a collaborative Humanities faculty in Wigan . In a town with a profound industrial legacy—from its coal mining roots to its role in the industrial revolution—this school provides a rich local context for a specialist who can bring the past to life. We are looking for a teacher who can navigate the sweep of time, from the medieval world to the global conflicts of the 20th century. Core Responsibilities Pedagogical Excellence: Planning and delivering high-quality, enquiry-led lessons across KS3 & KS4 , with potential opportunities to teach A-Level History . Historical Enquiry: Developing students’ ability to evaluate primary and secondary sources, fostering a sophisticated understanding of bias, perspective, and historical significance. Discursive Leadership: Cultivating a classroom environment where students feel confident debating complex moral and political issues, from the transatlantic slave trade to the rise of modern democracies. Curriculum Innovation: Integrating local Wigan heritage into the broader national curriculum, ensuring students understand their town's place within the wider British and global story. Exam Mastery: Guiding GCSE cohorts through the AQA or Edexcel specifications, focusing on structured essay writing and the command of chronological knowledge to secure outstanding results. Literacy & Oracy: Supporting students in developing high-level extended writing skills and the ability to articulate complex historical arguments with precision. Why This School? Wigan’s Industrial Heart: Work in a town that is proud of its history, providing immediate access to local archives and museums that serve as excellent resources for learning. Collaborative Humanities Team: Join a department that values "co-planning" and shared resources, working alongside Geography and RE colleagues to provide a holistic cultural education. Modern Learning Environment: Benefit from dedicated History suites, an extensive library of historical texts, and the latest digital tools for interactive source analysis. Professional Growth: Access to Historical Association accredited CPD, specialist training in "De-colonising the Curriculum," and clear pathways to Head of Department or Literacy Lead roles. Candidate Profile Qualification: QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) and a strong honours degree in History or a closely related discipline. Subject Knowledge: A broad chronological understanding and a genuine passion for a specific period of history that can be shared with enthusiasm. Pedagogy: A proven track record of facilitating strong student progress and a commitment to "Evidence-Informed" teaching practices. Character: A resilient, empathetic educator with the ability to inspire a love for the past in students of all backgrounds and abilities.
