Job description
A well-regarded secondary school in Northampton is seeking a knowledgeable and enthusiastic Teacher of History to join its thriving Humanities department. This is an excellent opportunity for a passionate historian to inspire students with engaging lessons that develop curiosity, critical thinking and a deeper understanding of the world. The school serves a diverse local community and has developed a strong reputation for academic progress, clear behaviour systems and a supportive learning environment where both students and staff can thrive. About the Role As Teacher of History, you will teach across Key Stages 3 and 4, with the possibility of contributing to KS5 depending on experience and timetable. The curriculum is designed to provide students with a broad understanding of historical periods while developing key analytical skills such as source evaluation, argument building and historical interpretation. Students explore a wide range of topics including British history, international conflict, social change and political developments. Lessons are structured to encourage discussion and debate while ensuring students develop strong written and analytical skills. You will work closely with colleagues in the Humanities department to plan lessons, share resources and ensure that students experience a well-sequenced curriculum that supports long-term understanding. The Humanities Department The Humanities department is a supportive and collaborative team that values strong subject expertise and shared planning. Teachers work together to develop engaging schemes of work and regularly exchange ideas to enhance teaching and learning. History is a popular subject within the school, particularly at GCSE, where students enjoy studying topics that connect historical events with modern society. The department encourages enquiry-led learning, allowing students to explore historical questions and develop their own interpretations supported by evidence. Enrichment activities such as history clubs, guest speakers and educational trips may also form an important part of the department’s work. About the School The school has built a positive learning culture where students are encouraged to take pride in their work and aim for academic success. Behaviour systems are clear and consistent, helping to create calm classrooms where teachers can focus on teaching. Staff benefit from a supportive leadership team that values professional development and encourages collaboration across departments. Teachers are trusted to bring creativity to their lessons while working within a structured curriculum that supports both staff and students. The school also places strong emphasis on developing students’ wider understanding of society and global issues, making Humanities subjects a central part of the curriculum.
