Pastoral Manager – Supportive Secondary School – York Start Date: As soon as possible Contract: Full-time, Permanent Salary: Paid to scale (support staff scale depending on experience) School Information This role is based in a respected Independent 11–18 secondary school located in York, North Yorkshire . The school has a long-standing reputation for academic excellence combined with exceptional pastoral care. Pastoral care is a key strength of the school, with dedicated staff ensuring that students receive guidance and support whenever needed. Role Overview The school is seeking an experienced and empathetic Pastoral Manager to join the pastoral leadership team. The successful candidate will support students across a designated year group, ensuring that pastoral systems operate effectively and that students receive the support required to succeed. This role requires someone who can build positive relationships with students while working collaboratively with teachers, families and external support services. Key Responsibilities • Lead pastoral support for a designated year group • Monitor student behaviour, wellbeing and attendance • Support students experiencing social, emotional or behavioural challenges • Work closely with Heads of Year and senior leaders to maintain high standards of conduct • Liaise with parents and guardians regarding pastoral concerns • Coordinate support plans for students requiring additional guidance • Contribute to safeguarding procedures and documentation • Promote positive behaviour and school values • Support the reintegration of students returning from absence or external support programmes • Coordinate interventions designed to support student wellbeing • Maintain accurate pastoral records • Work collaboratively with teachers and support staff to ensure student success Candidate Profile The school is seeking a professional who is passionate about supporting young people and helping them succeed. The ideal candidate will demonstrate: • Experience working with young people in an educational or pastoral setting • Strong communication and interpersonal skills • Ability to build trust with students and families • Understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures • Strong organisational skills • Ability to manage challenging situations calmly and professionally • Commitment to promoting positive behaviour and student wellbeing • Ability to work collaboratively with teaching and support staff • Sensitivity when handling confidential information Experience within a secondary school environment is desirable.
