Job description
A well-established and improving 11–18 secondary school in Stoke-on-Trent is seeking an ambitious and highly capable Second in Charge of Mathematics to support the strategic leadership of a successful and growing Maths department. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Maths teacher ready to step into middle leadership, or for an existing 2iC seeking a new challenge within a structured and supportive school environment. The school has made strong progress in recent years, with Maths outcomes steadily improving and a clear focus on consistency, high expectations and purposeful teaching. The Role Working closely with the Head of Department, you will support the day-to-day leadership of the Maths faculty and help drive further improvements in attainment and progress across Key Stages 3–5. Key responsibilities will include: • Supporting curriculum planning and sequencing across all year groups • Monitoring student progress and coordinating intervention strategies • Leading on a specific area of responsibility (e.g. assessment, KS4 outcomes or numeracy strategy) • Coaching and mentoring colleagues, including ECTs • Contributing to departmental quality assurance processes • Teaching a full timetable across KS3–KS5 The department follows a structured, mastery-informed approach with centralised schemes of learning and shared resources, allowing leaders to focus on quality of delivery and student outcomes. The Department The Maths department is one of the largest in the school, with a blend of experienced practitioners and early career teachers. Collaboration is a strength, with regular moderation, shared planning and clear expectations around assessment and feedback. GCSE results have shown consistent improvement, and A-Level Mathematics continues to attract strong uptake. The department also plays a central role in whole-school numeracy initiatives.
