Job description
A well-established independent day school in Lincoln is seeking to appoint an inspiring and academically confident Teacher of English to join its thriving English department from January 2026 . This is a full-time, permanent opportunity to work within a school that places intellectual curiosity, articulate expression and pastoral care at the heart of its educational philosophy. The school offers a traditional academic education within a modern, supportive environment, where pupils are encouraged to think independently, write with precision and engage confidently in discussion. English is a cornerstone subject within the curriculum and plays a central role in shaping students’ academic and personal development. The Role You will teach English across Key Stages 3–5 , delivering a challenging and enriching curriculum to small, highly motivated classes. The department places strong emphasis on close reading, analytical writing and the development of an authentic literary voice. At Key Stage 3, pupils follow a broad and carefully structured programme that introduces them to a wide range of literature, including classic texts, modern prose and poetry from diverse voices. Lessons focus on vocabulary development, sentence fluency and confident expression, ensuring strong foundations for later study. At GCSE, students are supported to develop sophisticated responses to literature and language, with careful modelling of essay structure, regular practice and personalised feedback. Outcomes are consistently strong, reflecting both high expectations and effective teaching. At A-Level, English is a popular subject with students who enjoy academic challenge. Teaching encourages independent reading, critical debate and engagement with wider literary criticism. Teachers have the freedom to explore texts in depth and shape discussion-led lessons that stretch and inspire. The English Department The English department is a close-knit and intellectually engaged team, made up of subject specialists who share a commitment to academic excellence and thoughtful teaching. Collaboration is valued, but professional autonomy is respected. Schemes of work are well considered rather than rigid, allowing teachers to bring their own academic interests into lessons while maintaining coherence across year groups. Department meetings focus on curriculum quality, pedagogy and scholarly discussion rather than administrative tasks. English contributes meaningfully to the wider life of the school through reading societies, creative writing opportunities, theatre visits and public speaking events. Staff are encouraged to contribute to enrichment in ways that align naturally with their interests. The School This independent school is known for its strong academic outcomes, warm community atmosphere and excellent pastoral care. Pupils are polite, articulate and engaged, and relationships between staff and students are built on mutual respect. Pastoral systems are robust and highly effective. Tutors and pastoral leaders know pupils well and work closely with teaching staff to support both academic progress and wellbeing. Behaviour is exemplary, allowing lessons to be calm, focused and intellectually demanding. Leadership is experienced, visible and supportive. Teachers are trusted as professionals and are encouraged to teach with confidence and creativity, free from excessive bureaucracy. Facilities and Learning Environment The school occupies an attractive campus with a mix of traditional architecture and modern learning spaces. Classrooms are well maintained and designed to support discussion-based learning, close reading and extended writing. The library is a central academic resource and is actively used by pupils across all key stages. It supports independent research, wider reading and A-Level study, reinforcing the school’s strong academic culture. Technology is used thoughtfully to support teaching and learning, without detracting from the emphasis on scholarship, reading and written expression. Professional Development Professional development is approached with intellectual seriousness. Teachers are encouraged to deepen their subject knowledge, engage with academic research and attend relevant conferences or training. Opportunities exist to: Teach across the full secondary age range Contribute to curriculum development Support academic enrichment and scholarly projects Progress into subject or pastoral leadership roles Career development is supported at an appropriate pace, with mentoring and guidance available for those seeking progression. Workload and Staff Wellbeing The school is mindful of staff workload and takes a measured approach to expectations. Small class sizes allow for meaningful feedback without excessive marking, and administrative demands are kept proportionate. Staff wellbeing is genuinely valued, and the working culture is described as professional, supportive and intellectually stimulating. Many teachers choose to remain at the school long-term due to the balance of challenge and care. The Ideal Candidate The successful candidate will: Hold QTS or an equivalent teaching qualification Have strong academic credentials in English or a related discipline Be confident teaching English to GCSE and A-Level Enjoy working with motivated, academically curious pupils Value scholarship, discussion and high-quality writing Be reflective, professional and committed to continuous development Why This Role Stands Out Prestigious independent day school setting Small classes and highly engaged pupils English as a flagship subject within the curriculum Professional autonomy and academic trust Outstanding pastoral care and leadership support Application If you are a Teacher of English seeking a January 2026 move into a school that values intellectual depth, professional respect and academic excellence, we would be delighted to receive your CV.
