Job description
Caretaker – Outstanding Secondary School – Newcastle Start Date: As soon as possible Contract: Full-time, Permanent Salary: Paid to scale School information: This is an 11 to 18 well-established, Outstanding Ofsted Rated School located in Newcastle upon Tyne. The school is widely recognised for its exceptional academic standards, student behaviour, campus facilities, and highly efficient operational systems. Set across several acres of beautifully maintained grounds, the school offers an inspiring learning environment with modern classroom buildings, science laboratories, a sports complex, landscaped outdoor areas, and purpose-built learning spaces. Students demonstrate outstanding behaviour, strong engagement in lessons, and a clear commitment to learning. The school’s ethos is grounded in respect, responsibility, and ambition, with every member of staff contributing to a culture of pride and high expectation. The leadership team places significant importance on the school’s physical environment, recognising that a safe, clean, and well-maintained site is essential to successful teaching and learning. Staff benefit from a collaborative professional culture with strong communication between teaching, pastoral, and operational teams. The school emphasises professional development for support staff, including facilities training, health and safety accreditation, and opportunities for progression within the premises and site management structure. Premises Department: The Premises and Facilities Department oversees the full management, safety, maintenance, and presentation of the school site. The team includes the Site Manager, Assistant Site Manager, caretakers, and cleaning staff. Together, they ensure the school remains safe, secure, functional, and welcoming for students, staff, families, and visitors. As a Caretaker, you will play a crucial role in the day-to-day operation of the school. Your responsibilities will include general maintenance, site security, health and safety checks, basic repairs, grounds support, and ensuring that all areas of the school are suitable for use. You will carry out regular building inspections, maintain logs, support contractors, and assist with school events, furniture movement, and cleaning when necessary. The Premises Department operates with high efficiency and attention to detail. The environment is structured yet flexible, with clear routines and the need to respond to unexpected situations such as weather disruptions, emergency repairs, or last-minute classroom adjustments. You will work closely with the Site Manager to ensure compliance with school policies, HSE guidelines, and safeguarding requirements. Your daily duties may include opening and closing the school site, monitoring alarms and security systems, conducting minor plumbing, carpentry, or painting tasks, ensuring safe walkways, replenishing supplies, and maintaining equipment. You may also assist with fire drills, emergency procedures, and risk assessment documentation. This role is ideal for someone practical, reliable, hardworking, and committed to keeping the school environment safe and welcoming. Requirements: • Previous caretaking, maintenance, or facilities experience (school experience welcomed but not essential). • Strong practical skills in repairs, basic maintenance, and general DIY. • Understanding of health and safety regulations and site security. • Good organisational, time-management, and communication skills. • Ability to work independently and as part of a team. • Flexibility and willingness to respond to unexpected issues. • A proactive, positive, and solution-focused approach. • Commitment to safeguarding and maintaining a safe school environment. Application – Caretaker To apply, please send your CV as soon as possible.
