Job description
A well-regarded independent school in Shrewsbury is seeking an energetic and creative Teacher of Drama to join its established Performing Arts department. The school is known for strong academic standards alongside a rich co-curricular programme, with Drama playing a central role in school life. Productions, performance evenings and inter-school festivals are a highlight of the academic year, and the department has built a strong reputation for nurturing confident, articulate and expressive students. The Role This is a full teaching position across KS3–KS5, including GCSE and A-Level Drama. The successful candidate will combine practical theatre expertise with academic rigour, preparing students thoroughly for both performance and written examination components. You will: • Teach Drama across KS3, GCSE and A-Level • Direct and produce school performances • Support students in both practical and theoretical aspects of the subject • Contribute to co-curricular theatre clubs and productions • Collaborate with English and Music departments where appropriate Small class sizes allow for focused rehearsal time and detailed feedback on coursework and performance work. The Performing Arts Department The department operates within dedicated performance spaces including a theatre hall and rehearsal studios. Technical support is available for lighting and sound during major productions. Department strengths include: • Strong GCSE and A-Level results • Regular full-scale productions • High student participation across year groups • Structured coursework moderation and assessment • Collaboration across Creative Arts subjects There is scope to expand outreach work and further develop theatre partnerships. The School Located in Shrewsbury, the school blends historic architecture with modern facilities. Students are motivated and highly engaged in co-curricular activities, particularly in the Creative Arts. Pastoral systems are strong, and staff are encouraged to contribute to boarding life or extracurricular programmes where appropriate. The school fosters a supportive and professional working culture. Facilities include: • A dedicated theatre and performance space • Rehearsal rooms and drama studios • Modern classroom technology • Extensive extracurricular and enrichment provision Who We’re Looking For The successful candidate will: • Hold QTS or equivalent qualification • Demonstrate strong practical theatre experience • Be confident teaching Drama through to A-Level • Show enthusiasm for directing and production leadership • Value collaboration within the Creative Arts Independent school experience is welcomed but not essential for a dynamic and capable Drama specialist.
