Job description
Location: Cheshunt, Hertfordshire Job Title: Behaviour Mentor School Setting: Primary School (Reception–Year 6) Pay Rate: £90–£125 per day (dependent on experience) Contract Type: Full-time, long-term, term-time only Start Date: Immediate or by agreement Role Overview We are looking for a caring, proactive, and skilled Behaviour Mentor to join a primary school in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire . The school is committed to supporting every child’s academic and emotional development and creating a safe, nurturing, and inclusive learning environment. As a Behaviour Mentor, you will support pupils who experience difficulties with behaviour, emotional regulation, or engagement in learning. Many children may have SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) needs, ADHD, anxiety, or low self-esteem. Others may need guidance in developing social skills, coping strategies, and confidence in school life. This role is ideal for someone who thrives on building trusting relationships with primary-aged children, delivering structured pastoral interventions, and collaborating with teaching staff to ensure all pupils can reach their potential. Purpose of the Behaviour Mentor Role The Behaviour Mentor’s role is to provide targeted support to children who face barriers to learning due to behavioural and emotional challenges. The role combines proactive and reactive interventions: Proactive support: Lead 1:1 mentoring sessions and small group interventions that focus on emotional regulation, self-confidence, social skills, and resilience. Reactive support: Respond calmly and effectively to behavioural incidents, helping pupils manage emotions, repair relationships, and return to learning positively. The school follows a trauma-informed and restorative approach , recognising that challenging behaviour often signals unmet emotional needs. You will help pupils understand and manage their emotions, develop coping strategies, and build positive relationships with peers and staff. Key Responsibilities As a Behaviour Mentor in Cheshunt, your responsibilities will include: Delivering 1:1 mentoring for pupils needing additional emotional or behavioural support. Running small group sessions focused on social skills, emotional regulation, resilience, and problem-solving. Supporting pupils in classrooms to maintain focus, engagement, and appropriate behaviour. Assisting during unstructured times such as break times, lunchtimes, and transitions to reduce conflict and promote positive social interactions. Calmly de-escalating challenging behaviour using restorative techniques. Supporting pupils after incidents to reflect on behaviour, repair relationships, and develop positive strategies for future situations. Collaborating with teachers, SENCOs, and pastoral staff to design and implement individual behaviour support plans. Keeping accurate records of interventions, incidents, and progress, reporting outcomes to senior staff. Encouraging restorative practices, empathy, and problem-solving skills among pupils. Maintaining safeguarding compliance and professional boundaries at all times. The School Environment This primary school in Cheshunt serves a diverse community and places strong emphasis on inclusion, pastoral care, and emotional wellbeing. The school believes that pupils achieve best when they feel safe, supported, and valued. The leadership team recognises the vital contribution of Behaviour Mentors and provides guidance, supervision, and professional development opportunities. Staff work collaboratively to ensure the social, emotional, and behavioural needs of each child are addressed effectively. The school uses trauma-informed and restorative practices alongside structured behaviour management approaches, focusing on developing long-term emotional resilience, self-regulation, and positive peer relationships. Students You Will Support Children supported by the Behaviour Mentor may: Display disruptive, withdrawn, or challenging behaviour. Struggle with emotional regulation, low self-esteem, or anxiety. Have SEMH needs, ADHD, or attachment difficulties. Experience challenges with peer relationships, routines, or transitions. Be at risk of disengaging from learning or social activities. Your role will help pupils build confidence, resilience, and positive behavioural strategies, enabling them to engage fully in learning and school life. Who This Role Is Suitable For This role is ideal for individuals who: Have experience supporting primary-aged children in education, care, or youth support roles. Are patient, empathetic, and emotionally resilient. Can manage challenging behaviour in a positive and supportive way. Are confident in building strong, professional relationships with young children. Are motivated to work in pastoral care and support inclusion. Graduates in psychology, education, social sciences, or related fields are encouraged to apply, as are experienced Behaviour Mentors seeking a primary school environment. Essential Requirements Experience supporting children with behavioural or emotional challenges. Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills. Ability to remain calm, professional, and consistent under pressure. Commitment to safeguarding, inclusion, and equality. Willingness to engage in ongoing professional development. Desirable Experience Previous Behaviour Mentor or Teaching Assistant experience in primary schools. Knowledge of SEMH, ADHD, or trauma-informed practice. Experience delivering 1:1 or small group interventions. Relevant qualifications in education, pastoral care, or child development. What the School Offers Competitive daily pay with long-term stability. Comprehensive induction and ongoing professional development opportunities. Supportive teaching, pastoral, and leadership teams. Opportunities for career progression within primary education and pastoral care. A positive, inclusive, and professional working environment. Why This Role Is Meaningful As a Behaviour Mentor in Cheshunt, you will make a lasting impact on children’s social, emotional, and behavioural development. Your consistent support and guidance will help pupils develop resilience, manage emotions, and re-engage positively in learning and social activities. If you are passionate about working with primary-aged children, committed to inclusion, and motivated to make a difference, this Behaviour Mentor role in Cheshunt offers a highly rewarding and impactful opportunity.
