Job description
Position: SEN Teaching Assistant Location: London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham Pay Rate: £95–£125 per day, depending on experience Contract Type: Full-time, long-term role with the potential for permanent placement Working Hours: Monday to Friday, term time only Start Date: Immediate or next academic term Role Overview An inclusive and progressive primary school within the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham is seeking a dedicated and resilient Special Educational Needs Teaching Assistant (SEN TA) to support pupils with additional learning and emotional needs. This role is ideal for an individual who understands that working with children with SEN requires patience, adaptability, and a genuine commitment to inclusive education. The successful SEN Teaching Assistant will support pupils who may find traditional classroom environments challenging and require tailored strategies to engage with learning, regulate emotions, and develop social skills. This is a hands-on role that requires consistency, empathy, and a proactive approach to supporting pupil wellbeing and progress. Pupil Needs and SEN Support In this role, you will support pupils with a variety of special educational needs, including: Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs Speech, language, and communication difficulties Sensory processing challenges Learning delays and developmental differences Support may be provided on a one-to-one basis or within small group settings , depending on pupil needs. Some pupils may require structured routines and consistent adult support throughout the school day, while others may benefit from targeted intervention at specific times. Key Responsibilities As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will be responsible for: Providing tailored support to pupils with SEN throughout the school day Supporting pupils to engage with lessons and learning activities Working alongside the class teacher to adapt resources and teaching approaches Implementing strategies outlined in EHCPs and support plans Supporting emotional regulation and behaviour management Encouraging positive communication and social interaction Supporting pupils during transitions and unstructured times Supervising pupils during break times and lunchtime where required Monitoring and recording progress, behaviour, and engagement Providing feedback to teachers, SENCOs, and other professionals Supporting personal care needs when necessary, with dignity and respect Helping to create a safe, calm, and inclusive learning environment You will be expected to maintain professional boundaries while building trusting relationships with pupils. The Ideal Candidate The school is seeking an SEN Teaching Assistant who is: Patient, empathetic, and emotionally resilient Confident supporting pupils with challenging behaviour Passionate about inclusive education and SEN support Flexible and adaptable to changing needs A strong communicator and effective team player Previous experience in a school or SEN setting is highly desirable, but not essential. Candidates with experience in care, youth work, mental health support, or behaviour support roles are encouraged to apply if they demonstrate a genuine commitment to working with children with additional needs. Skills and Attributes Key skills and attributes include: A basic understanding of SEN and inclusive practice Ability to remain calm and consistent under pressure Strong observation and reporting skills Confidence following behaviour support plans Willingness to engage in training and professional development A proactive and positive approach to challenges Commitment to safeguarding and child welfare Formal SEN qualifications are not required, as training and support will be provided.
