Welfare Officer – Good Secondary School – Portsmouth Start Date: As soon as possible Contract: Full-time, Permanent Salary: Paid to scale School Information: This is an 11 to 18 Good Ofsted Rated School located in Portsmouth, known for its warm, nurturing ethos and strong commitment to student wellbeing. The school has built a reputation for excellent behaviour, a positive learning culture, and a holistic approach to education that values personal development alongside academic progress. The student community is diverse, with a wide range of pastoral needs that the school addresses through an extensive wellbeing framework and strong safeguarding systems. The leadership team prioritises wellbeing at the heart of its vision. Recent investments have included a refurbished wellbeing hub, quiet spaces for mentoring, expanded pastoral staffing, and enhanced training for all staff in mental health support. The school environment is calm, structured, and supportive, with clear routines and an emphasis on kindness, respect, and fairness. Staff at this school benefit from robust pastoral systems, regular CPD training sessions, mental health first-aid training opportunities, and strong collaboration between departments. The safeguarding culture is exemplary, with high vigilance, early intervention, and open communication channels. Welfare Department: The Welfare Team is central to the emotional, social, and mental wellbeing of students. As the Welfare Officer, you will work closely with the Pastoral Leader, SENCO, safeguarding team, tutors, and external agencies to provide early intervention and support for students facing emotional, behavioural, or social difficulties. The welfare hub is a dedicated space where students can access one-to-one conversations, mentoring sessions, emotional support, and targeted interventions. The department works proactively to prevent concerns from escalating and to ensure that every child feels heard, valued, and supported. Key responsibilities include: • Providing emotional and pastoral support to students on a daily basis. • Offering early intervention strategies to help students manage anxiety, social issues, behaviour concerns, or wellbeing challenges. • Maintaining accurate welfare records in line with safeguarding protocols. • Working with external agencies such as CAMHS, social services, and counselling providers. • Supporting attendance and behaviour teams where needed. • Running wellbeing workshops or small groups focused on resilience, emotional regulation, and social skills. • Communicating regularly with parents, carers, and staff. • Promoting a culture of openness, safety, and student empowerment. Requirements: • Experience working with young people in a pastoral, wellbeing, or safeguarding capacity. • Strong communication and empathy skills. • Understanding of safeguarding and child protection (training provided). • Ability to remain calm, compassionate, and professional under pressure. • Strong record-keeping and organisational skills. • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team. • A sincere commitment to student wellbeing and inclusion.
