Pastoral Support Officer – Outstanding Secondary School – Reading Start Date: As soon as possible** Contract: Full-time, Permanent Salary: Paid to scale** School Information This Outstanding Ofsted-rated 11–18 secondary school in Reading is known for its exceptional pastoral care, strong academic outcomes, and positive school culture. The school places student wellbeing at the core of its mission and has a deeply embedded pastoral model that supports emotional, behavioural, and social development. The school campus includes dedicated pastoral hubs, wellbeing rooms, and intervention spaces designed to support vulnerable pupils. Staff benefit from excellent leadership, continuous professional development, and a collaborative approach that ensures pastoral support officers can be successful and well supported in their roles. Role Information The Pastoral Support Officer will work closely with Heads of Year, the Safeguarding Lead, SENCO, and teaching staff to provide day-to-day support for pupils experiencing behavioural, emotional, or social difficulties. Key responsibilities include managing pupil behaviour interventions, monitoring pastoral referrals, liaising with families, supporting restorative conversations, keeping accurate pastoral records, and assisting with safeguarding processes. You will deliver targeted 1:1 and group support sessions, help pupils re-engage with learning, manage pastoral spaces, support crisis situations, and contribute to multi-agency meetings when necessary. The role requires empathy, firmness, excellent communication, and the ability to build trust with young people while maintaining professional boundaries. Requirements • Experience in pastoral support, youth work, mentoring, safeguarding, or behaviour support • Strong interpersonal and communication skills • Understanding of safeguarding and child protection • Confident managing challenging behaviour • Excellent record-keeping and organisational abilities • Calm, resilient, patient, and solution-focused • Ability to work closely with pastoral and safeguarding teams Application To apply, please send your CV as soon as possible.
