Job description
A long-established independent co-educational school in Lincolnshire is seeking to appoint a talented and thoughtful Teacher of English to join its successful English department from January 2026 . This is a full-time, permanent role within a school that places academic scholarship, character development and intellectual curiosity at the heart of its educational philosophy. English plays a central role in the life of the school. The subject is seen not only as an academic discipline, but as a means of developing articulate, reflective and confident young people. This is an excellent opportunity for an English teacher who values depth of study, discussion-led lessons and a calm, purposeful classroom culture. The Role You will teach English across Key Stages 3–5 , including GCSE and A-Level English Literature and Language. Classes are small, allowing teachers to know pupils well and tailor their teaching to individual strengths and needs. At Key Stage 3, the curriculum is broad and ambitious, introducing pupils to a wide range of literary traditions, genres and voices. Lessons focus on building strong reading habits, analytical writing skills and confident spoken expression. At GCSE, pupils are supported to engage critically with set texts while developing secure exam technique. Teaching prioritises clarity, structured writing and thoughtful interpretation, resulting in consistently strong outcomes. At A-Level, English is a popular subject with able and motivated students. Teaching encourages independent reading, critical debate and scholarly writing. Teachers are given professional freedom to explore texts in depth and foster genuine intellectual engagement. The English Department The English department is a stable and well-established team, known for its collaborative ethos and high academic standards. Schemes of work provide coherence across year groups while allowing teachers to bring their own interests and expertise into the classroom. Departmental discussions focus on curriculum quality, assessment and pedagogy rather than administrative tasks. Shared resources, moderation and thoughtful planning ensure consistency without restricting creativity. Enrichment is a natural extension of classroom learning. The department supports activities such as reading groups, creative writing opportunities, theatre visits and literary events, all of which are well-attended and valued by pupils. The School This independent school has a strong academic reputation and is known for its warm, inclusive community. Pupils are polite, engaged and curious, creating an environment where teaching and learning can thrive. Pastoral care is a significant strength. Tutors and house staff work closely with teaching colleagues to support pupils academically and personally. Behaviour is excellent, and classrooms are calm, focused and respectful. Leadership is experienced and supportive, placing a strong emphasis on professional trust. Teachers are encouraged to teach with confidence and are supported rather than micromanaged. Facilities and Learning Environment The school is set within attractive grounds and combines traditional architecture with well-maintained, modern teaching spaces. English classrooms are designed to support discussion-based learning and extended written work. The library is an important academic resource and is actively used by pupils at all key stages, particularly to support A-Level study and wider reading. Quiet study spaces and seminar-style areas encourage independent learning. Digital resources are used purposefully to support research, drafting and feedback, while maintaining a strong focus on reading, writing and critical thinking. Professional Development The school takes professional development seriously and supports staff in developing both subject expertise and teaching practice. Opportunities are available to: Teach across the full age range Contribute to curriculum development Take on pastoral or academic responsibilities Engage in subject-specific CPD and wider educational dialogue Career progression is supported in a thoughtful and sustainable way. Workload and Culture Workload is carefully managed, with realistic expectations around marking and assessment. Small class sizes allow for meaningful feedback without excessive burden. Staff describe the working culture as collegial, intellectually stimulating and supportive. Many teachers choose to remain at the school long-term due to the balance of academic challenge and quality of life. The Ideal Candidate The successful candidate will: Hold QTS or an equivalent teaching qualification Have strong subject knowledge and a love of literature and language Be confident teaching GCSE and A-Level English Value academic depth and discussion-based teaching Be reflective, professional and committed to high standards Why Apply? Prestigious independent co-educational setting Small, motivated classes Strong English outcomes and enrichment culture Professional autonomy and supportive leadership January 2026 start If you are an English Teacher seeking a January 2026 role in a school that values scholarship, calm professionalism and genuine academic engagement, we would be delighted to receive your CV.
