Job description
School Caretaker – Good Secondary School – Portsmouth Start Date: As soon as possible Contract: Full-time, Permanent Salary: Paid to scale** School Information This Good-rated 11–16 secondary school in Portsmouth is known for its friendly, hardworking staff community and well-maintained school environment. Facilities include modern classroom blocks, science labs, food tech rooms, sports halls, workshops, and landscaped grounds. The site team is valued for its essential contribution to keeping the school safe, operational, and welcoming. Leadership prioritises strong site management, clear communication, and proper investment in buildings and maintenance. Staff enjoy excellent CPD, supportive management, and structured workflow systems making daily operations efficient and well-organised. Role Information The school is seeking a reliable, practical, and safety-focused Caretaker to join their site team. Key Responsibilities: Opening and closing the school site, ensuring buildings are secure Conducting daily site checks, maintenance inspections, and safety audits Performing minor repairs (plumbing, carpentry, painting, general maintenance) Supervising contractors and ensuring work meets safety/compliance standards Managing deliveries, moving furniture, and setting up rooms for events/exams Maintaining outdoor areas: pathways, car parks, playgrounds, sports surfaces Monitoring heating, lighting, alarm systems, and energy systems Ensuring compliance with health & safety, fire safety, COSHH, and risk assessments Responding to emergencies, callouts, and urgent maintenance needs Supporting the site manager with long-term maintenance planning This role suits someone practical, physically fit, proactive, and highly dependable. Requirements Experience in maintenance, caretaking, or facilities work Strong DIY and repair skills Understanding of health & safety and compliance Ability to prioritise workload and respond quickly to urgent issues Good communication skills and teamwork Ability to carry out physical tasks and work outdoors when necessary Security awareness and reliability Application To apply, please send your CV as soon as possible.
