Job description
Full-Time | Permanent | MPS/UPS Start Date: ASAP Are you an enthusiastic, reflective, and passionate teacher looking to inspire curious minds at a crucial stage of their primary education? Do you want to work in a supportive, forward-thinking school located in the heart of a thriving Hertfordshire community? If so, we would love to hear from you. We are delighted to invite applications for a Year 5 Class Teacher to join our welcoming and inclusive primary school in Harpenden. This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious teacher who is committed to delivering high-quality teaching and learning, fostering a love of learning, and making a meaningful difference in children’s lives. About Our School Our school is a well-regarded, community-focused primary school set in the beautiful town of Harpenden. We pride ourselves on being a nurturing, inclusive, and aspirational learning environment where children are encouraged to aim high, develop confidence, and grow into respectful, responsible citizens. We serve a diverse and engaged community and benefit from strong parental support. Our pupils are enthusiastic, motivated, and eager to learn, and they respond positively to creative and well-structured teaching. Staff at our school work collaboratively, share best practice, and support one another to continually improve outcomes for all learners. We place a strong emphasis on wellbeing — for both pupils and staff — and believe that happy teachers create happy classrooms. Professional development is a key priority, and we actively support staff at all stages of their careers. The Role As a Year 5 Class Teacher, you will play a vital role in preparing pupils for the challenges of upper Key Stage 2 and their transition to Year 6. You will be responsible for delivering a broad, balanced, and engaging curriculum that inspires pupils and builds strong foundations in academic learning, independence, and resilience. You will plan and deliver high-quality lessons that meet the needs of all learners, using assessment effectively to inform teaching and ensure progress for every child. You will create a positive, inclusive classroom environment where pupils feel safe, valued, and motivated to do their best. The successful candidate will work closely with colleagues across Key Stage 2, contribute to curriculum development, and actively participate in the wider life of the school. Key Responsibilities Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging, well-structured lessons in line with the National Curriculum Create a stimulating and supportive learning environment that promotes curiosity and high expectations Use formative and summative assessment to track pupil progress and inform future planning Differentiate teaching to meet the needs of all learners, including those with SEND and higher-attaining pupils Promote positive behaviour and uphold the school’s values consistently Work collaboratively with colleagues, teaching assistants, and support staff Communicate effectively with parents and carers, building strong partnerships Contribute to staff meetings, training sessions, and school events Safeguard the wellbeing of pupils in line with school policies and procedures About You We are looking for a teacher who is passionate about teaching and learning, with a genuine commitment to helping every child succeed. You will ideally: Hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) Have experience teaching in Key Stage 2 (Year 5 experience desirable but not essential) Demonstrate strong subject knowledge and a clear understanding of effective pedagogy Be enthusiastic, creative, and committed to delivering engaging lessons Have high expectations for pupil achievement and behaviour Be an excellent communicator and team player Show a commitment to inclusion, equality, and safeguarding Be willing to contribute to the wider life of the school Early Career Teachers (ECTs) are welcome to apply and will receive high-quality mentoring and support. What We Offer A friendly, welcoming, and supportive staff team Well-behaved, motivated pupils who enjoy learning Strong leadership with a clear vision for the future Excellent professional development opportunities A collaborative and inclusive working environment Well-resourced classrooms and access to high-quality teaching materials A school that genuinely values staff wellbeing and work-life balance Location Harpenden is a vibrant and desirable town with excellent transport links to London and surrounding areas.
