Job description
A well-led and ambitious 11–18 secondary school in Derby is seeking a committed and enthusiastic Early Career Teacher of Geography to join its successful Humanities faculty. This is an excellent opportunity for a newly qualified teacher to begin their career in a school recognised for its calm learning environment, strong mentoring culture and clear academic expectations. Located within a diverse Derby community, the school has steadily improved outcomes over recent years and is proud of its structured behaviour systems and supportive leadership team. Geography is a well-established subject with strong GCSE uptake and growing Sixth Form interest. The Role As an ECT in Geography, you will teach across Key Stages 3 and 4, with opportunities to observe and contribute to Key Stage 5 lessons as your confidence develops. You will: • Deliver well-sequenced lessons aligned to a knowledge-rich curriculum • Teach a balanced programme of physical, human and environmental geography • Support GCSE preparation through structured revision and modelling • Use assessment data to inform planning and targeted intervention • Contribute to fieldwork planning and enrichment opportunities The department places strong emphasis on disciplinary thinking — helping students understand not only geographical content but how geographers analyse data, interpret case studies and evaluate environmental issues. ECT Support & Mentoring This Derby secondary has a strong record of nurturing Early Career Teachers and providing structured professional growth. You will benefit from: • A reduced timetable in line with ECT entitlement • A dedicated Geography mentor within the Humanities team • Weekly instructional coaching sessions • Clear feedback cycles and development targets • Observation opportunities within and beyond the department Shared planning resources and assessment frameworks ensure you are well supported from day one, reducing unnecessary workload while maintaining high academic standards. The Department The Humanities faculty is stable and collaborative, with a clear departmental identity. Geography teachers work closely together, refining curriculum sequencing and sharing best practice. Department strengths include: • Dedicated Humanities classrooms • Access to digital mapping and data analysis tools • Structured KS3 fieldwork and local case study integration • Strong GCSE outcomes with targeted intervention planning • A developing A-Level pathway The department also collaborates with Science and Citizenship colleagues on sustainability and climate-related projects. The School Environment Behaviour expectations are clear and consistently applied, allowing teachers to focus on high-quality instruction. Leadership is visible and accessible, and staff wellbeing is actively supported. The school has invested in: • Upgraded classroom technology • A central library and research space • Structured intervention programmes • Strong pastoral and safeguarding systems Staff describe the culture as professional, supportive and ambitious. Who We’re Looking For The successful candidate will: • Hold (or be on track to achieve) QTS in Geography • Demonstrate strong subject knowledge and curiosity • Be reflective and open to professional coaching • Have high expectations for behaviour and progress • Show enthusiasm for enrichment and fieldwork This is an ideal opportunity for a Geography ECT seeking a supportive, well-structured and academically focused school in Derby. What’s On Offer • Full ECT induction programme • Dedicated subject mentoring and coaching • Clear behaviour systems that support learning • A collaborative Humanities faculty • Strong career progression pathways This is an outstanding first post for an ambitious Geography teacher looking to develop in a structured and improving Derby secondary school.
