Job description
A well-organised 11–18 secondary school in Peterborough is seeking a committed and reflective Early Career Teacher of History to join its established Humanities faculty. The school has a strong emphasis on knowledge-rich teaching, high expectations and consistent behaviour systems, creating a calm and purposeful learning environment. History is a popular GCSE subject within the school, with a curriculum that balances British, European and global perspectives while developing students’ analytical writing and source evaluation skills. The Opportunity You will teach History across KS3 and KS4, following carefully sequenced schemes of work designed to support both students and early career teachers. The department places a strong emphasis on subject scholarship, retrieval practice and structured writing. As part of your ECT induction, you will receive: • A reduced timetable • A dedicated Humanities mentor • Weekly coaching sessions • Structured observation and feedback cycles • Access to subject-specific CPD and moderation meetings The school has a proven track record of developing ECTs and supporting progression into middle leadership roles. The History Department The Humanities faculty is collaborative and stable, with a clear focus on curriculum coherence and academic standards. Shared resources and common assessments provide structure, while allowing teachers to develop their own classroom style. Department strengths include: • Strong GCSE uptake • Clearly mapped curriculum progression • Regular moderation and exam preparation sessions • Cross-curricular links with Geography and Citizenship • Enrichment opportunities such as themed history days and educational visits Students are encouraged to engage in thoughtful discussion and develop strong written arguments supported by evidence. The School Environment Located in Peterborough with strong community links, the school serves a diverse and ambitious cohort. Behaviour systems are consistent and well embedded, creating focused classrooms where learning can flourish. Leadership is approachable and committed to professional development. The school’s ECT programme is structured and embedded within its wider CPD framework, ensuring new teachers feel supported and valued. Facilities include: • Modern Humanities classrooms • Interactive classroom technology • Dedicated Sixth Form areas • Clear pastoral support systems Staff describe the culture as professional, supportive and driven by improvement. Who We’re Looking For The successful candidate will: • Be on track to achieve (or have recently achieved) QTS • Demonstrate strong subject knowledge in History • Show enthusiasm for academic scholarship and structured teaching • Be reflective and open to mentoring • Maintain high expectations for behaviour and progress This role is ideal for an ECT seeking a well-supported first position within a strong Humanities faculty. What’s On Offer • A comprehensive and structured ECT induction programme • A collaborative and well-led Humanities department • Clear behaviour systems • Strong professional development opportunities • A respected and stable Peterborough secondary school environment This is an excellent opportunity for a History ECT to begin their career in a school that values structure, scholarship and long-term development.
