Job description
Attendance Officer – Outstanding Secondary School – Nottingham Start Date: As soon as possible Contract: Full-time, Permanent Salary: Paid to scale School Information: This is an 11 to 18 Outstanding Ofsted Rated Secondary School located in Nottingham. The school is nationally recognised for its high academic performance, exceptional behaviour standards, and strong pastoral structures. A cornerstone of the school’s success is its robust attendance culture, which ensures that every student maximises their learning opportunities. The school environment is calm, purposeful, and well-structured. Students show pride in their school and demonstrate high levels of engagement. Staff work within a highly supportive culture where collaboration, shared expectations, and continuous improvement underpin daily practice. The leadership team values operational excellence and invests heavily in attendance, welfare, safeguarding, and pastoral departments. The school campus includes modern facilities, digital attendance systems, dedicated pastoral offices, and meeting rooms for student and family support sessions. This makes the Attendance Team a central and well-resourced part of the school community. Attendance Department: The Attendance Department ensures that all students attend school regularly, punctually, and safely. As the Attendance Officer, you will work closely with Heads of Year, safeguarding leads, tutors, pastoral staff, and external agencies to promote positive attendance habits and target concerns early. This department manages daily registers, monitors attendance data, conducts home visits, communicates with families, and provides rapid intervention for persistent absence. The team works with precision, discretion, and a solution-focused approach to ensure compliance, safeguarding, and student wellbeing. Daily responsibilities include: • Monitoring daily student attendance using systems such as SIMS, Bromcom, or Arbor. • Identifying patterns of absence and intervening early to prevent escalation. • Making first-day absence calls to parents/carers and recording responses. • Meeting students and families to discuss attendance concerns. • Producing attendance reports for senior leaders, governors, and Heads of Year. • Coordinating attendance panels and supporting action plans. • Carrying out home visits when required (with pastoral or safeguarding support). • Working closely with external agencies such as the Education Welfare Service. • Updating attendance registers and class lists with accuracy and confidentiality. • Supporting whole-school attendance initiatives, reward schemes, and campaigns. This role has a strong safeguarding element. You will be instrumental in ensuring the safety and welfare of students who are absent without explanation. Requirements: • Experience in a school attendance, pastoral, youth, or administrative role. • Strong communication skills, with the ability to speak confidently with families. • Excellent organisational and data-management abilities. • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities. • Understanding of safeguarding and child protection (training provided). • Accuracy, professionalism, and confidentiality at all times. • A calm, persistent, and solution-focused approach to challenging situations. • Proficiency in MIS systems desirable.
