Job description
SENCO – Outstanding Secondary School – Sheffield Start Date: As soon as possible Contract: Full-time, Permanent Salary: Paid to scale (SEND allowance included) School Information This Outstanding 11–18 secondary school in Sheffield (Ecclesall area) is celebrated for its exceptional provision for students with additional needs, inclusive culture, and sector-leading pastoral systems. The school has been repeatedly praised by Ofsted for its nurturing environment, proactive SEND interventions, and highly trained support teams. With a diverse student population and a strong reputation in the local area, the school provides high-quality teaching, targeted interventions, and personalised learning pathways for SEND learners. The Learning Support Centre is modern and well-resourced, featuring breakout rooms, sensory areas, and specialist equipment. The school places strong emphasis on continuous professional development, offering SEND-specific CPD, external training, leadership shadowing, and opportunities to attend SEND conferences. Staff wellbeing is a major priority, and collaboration between teachers, teaching assistants, and pastoral staff is seamless and well-established. Role Information The school is seeking a dedicated, knowledgeable, and child-centred SENCO to lead the SEND provision across all year groups. This is a key leadership role with responsibility for ensuring the highest standards of support for students with special educational needs. Key responsibilities include: Leading the SEND department and managing a large team of learning support assistants Coordinating SEND provision across KS3–KS5 Writing, reviewing, and implementing EHCPs and student support plans Conducting assessments, identifying student needs, and planning interventions Liaising with external agencies including EPs, CAMHS, speech therapists, and social workers Providing guidance and training to teaching staff on inclusive practice Ensuring statutory compliance with the SEND Code of Practice Overseeing exam access arrangements and ensuring JCQ compliance Meeting regularly with parents and carers to discuss progress and support Monitoring and evaluating the impact of interventions and provisions Preparing department reports for senior leadership and governors This is a high-impact role requiring empathy, strategic leadership, and expert understanding of SEND practices. Requirements National Award for SEN Coordination (NASENCO) OR willingness to undertake it Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) Strong experience supporting students with diverse SEND needs Excellent communication skills and the ability to lead a team Deep understanding of the SEND Code of Practice Strong organisational and record-keeping ability Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, LSAs, families, and agencies Application To apply, please send your CV as soon as possible.
