Job description
A respected independent secondary school in Northampton is seeking an academically accomplished and engaging Teacher of Psychology to join its thriving Sixth Form provision. Psychology is one of the school’s most popular A-Level subjects, with strong and consistent outcomes and a growing cohort of students progressing to competitive university courses in Psychology, Neuroscience, Sociology and related disciplines. This is an excellent opportunity to teach within a small-class, academically ambitious environment where intellectual debate, critical analysis and independent research are central to the learning culture. The Role You will primarily teach Psychology at Key Stage 5, delivering a rigorous and thoughtfully sequenced curriculum that prepares students for public examinations and university-level study. There may also be opportunities to contribute to related Social Science subjects depending on experience. The department values: Strong theoretical knowledge and clarity of explanation Critical evaluation of research methods and statistical analysis Structured essay writing and exam technique Independent study and academic curiosity Sixth Form lessons are seminar-style and discussion-led, allowing for deep exploration of topics such as cognitive processes, biopsychology, social influence and psychopathology. Students are encouraged to engage critically with contemporary research and develop confidence in academic writing. Academic & Departmental Culture Psychology sits within a well-regarded Social Sciences faculty alongside subjects such as Sociology and Politics. The department meets regularly to moderate essays, review data and refine exam preparation strategies. Students frequently pursue: Extended research projects University taster lectures Academic competitions and conferences Super-curricular reading beyond specification content The school places strong emphasis on preparing students for competitive higher education. Guidance on personal statements, interview preparation and university applications is structured and thorough. The School This Northampton independent school educates pupils from early secondary years through to Sixth Form and has a strong academic record across subjects. Class sizes are small, allowing for personalised feedback and sustained academic dialogue. The campus combines traditional architecture with modern teaching facilities, including dedicated Sixth Form study areas and specialist classrooms. The atmosphere is calm, scholarly and respectful. Staff describe the culture as collegiate and professionally supportive. Teachers are trusted as subject specialists and encouraged to pursue their academic interests. Professional development is well-supported, and leadership pathways are available for those seeking progression. About You Qualified teacher with a strong academic background in Psychology or a related discipline Experience teaching A-Level Psychology Confident delivering research methods and statistical content Passion for academic discussion and independent study Commitment to contributing to the wider life of the school What’s on Offer Competitive independent-sector salary Small, engaged Sixth Form classes Strong academic culture and intellectual environment Professional development and progression opportunities Access to school facilities and staff benefits This is a rare opportunity to teach Psychology within a prestigious independent setting that values scholarship, academic independence and high intellectual standards.
