Job description

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the United Kingdom, employing approximately 40,000 staff across a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health services to a population of over 1.15 million people, and to a wider population of 2.2 million when regional and national services are included.

The role:

Glasgow City HSCP is responsible for the provision of primary care and community services to the people of Glasgow City, and for improving health and well being. The HSCP covers the geographical area of Glasgow City Council, a population of 588,470, and includes 154 GP practices, 136 dental practices, 186 pharmacies and 85 optometry practices. The CHP has 3,140 whole time equivalent (wte) staff, and a combined budget of approximately £520m. Services within the CHP are delivered in three geographical sectors:

• North East Glasgow with a population of 177,649;

• North West Glasgow with a population of 190,332; and

• South Glasgow with a population of 220,489.

The Corporate and three Sector Offices are the main managerial centres for the HSCP

The primary/ community health service is delivered in Health Centres, Clinics and through a variety of office bases across each of the Sectors.

The purpose of the HSCP is to:

  • manage local NHS services;
  • improve the health of its population and close the inequalities gap;
  • drive the local implementation of the quality strategy ensuring person centred, safe and effective care;
  • achieve better specialist health care for its population;
  • ensure an effective NHS process to engage in community care and children’s service planning;
  • work closely with Glasgow City Council to deliver effective integrated services where appropriate
  • lead NHS participation in joint and community planning in ;
  • modernise community health services;
  • integrate community and specialist health care through clinical and care networks;
  • deliver effective engagement with primary care contractors;
  • work with local communities to ensure they influence decisions; and,
  • ensure patients and frontline health care professionals are fully involved in service delivery, design and decisions

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

Permanent post

Part time 31.10 hours per week

Shift Pattern - Monday & Wednesday 2-8pm, Tuesday 12-8pm, Thursday 1.30-6.30, Friday 12-6.30 (potential change to 8pm finish on a Thursday)

Key responsibilities:

  • Ensure the premises remain secure and lockfast.

  • Liaise with Police, Security, and line manager regarding unauthorised or disruptive individuals.

  • Report any loss or damage promptly to the line manager.

  • Maintain clean and tidy entrance grounds and building areas.

  • Carry out general maintenance tasks such as changing lights, unblocking toilets/sinks, assembling furniture, minor repairs, painting, and similar duties.

  • Fit and repair locks, adjust door mechanisms, change digital lock codes, and reset car park fobs.

  • Report maintenance tasks outside remit to Estates or line manager and ensure completion.

  • Check and distribute delivered goods/stores in line with risk assessments.

  • Set up rooms for clinics, meetings, and events.

  • Sort and distribute mail and take outgoing mail to the Post Office when required.

  • Remove waste and deal with spillages, including flooded toilets or burst pipes, following guidelines.

  • Use hired vehicles to move items between premises, dispose of bulk waste, and support departmental relocations.

  • Change curtains as part of the rolling programme.

  • Clean light diffusers and vents as scheduled.

  • Operate and respond to fire, intruder, and panic alarm systems and demonstrate these to contractors.

  • Provide daily support to maintenance craftspersons for safe and efficient building operations.

  • Carry out routine checks on equipment such as screens, wheelchairs, CCTV, panic alarms, and fire equipment, including six‑monthly inspections.

  • Inspect walkways and roadways monthly and repair potholes as required.

  • Work outdoors daily, including litter picking, snow clearance, gritting, and monitoring grit supplies.

  • Estimate size and cost of materials needed for new work such as shelving, workstations, and painting.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

  • Must hold a current driving licence.
  • Previous caretaking and maintenance experience.
  • Skilled or semi‑skilled background in the building industry, supported by short courses, on‑the‑job learning, and experience gained over time.
  • Basic keyboard skills.
  • Awareness of routine and non‑routine maintenance issues, with understanding of relevant procedures such as Health & Safety and Fire Safety.
  • Participation in mandatory training including Aggression Management, Fire Safety, Moving & Handling, Electrical Safety, Shelf Handling, Ladder Safety, and basic plumbing.
  • Training provided during induction and ongoing development to ensure safe working practices.
  • Through training and experience, able to understand local policies/procedures, respond to system failures (elevators, heating, alarms, CCTV), contribute to policy reviews, and support fitting/measuring of office furniture to DDA standards.
  • Acts as a point of contact for all health centres regarding faults, emergencies, system failures, and maintenance issues.
