Job description

Write a short description of your company, a boilerplate of the business, service or product that you offer. Include your business idea and the target audience. This text is primarily supposed to be descriptive, not selling.

A successful and well-regarded 11–18 secondary school in Skipton, North Yorkshire is seeking to appoint a passionate and reflective Teacher of English to join its established English department from January 2026. This is a full-time, permanent opportunity to work within a school that places strong emphasis on literacy, academic confidence, and the power of language to shape students’ futures.

This role would suit an English teacher who values thoughtful curriculum design, high-quality classroom discussion, and clear, structured teaching. The school is particularly keen to welcome a teacher who enjoys working collaboratively and who is committed to developing students as confident readers, writers, and communicators.

The Role

You will teach English across Key Stages 3 and 4, with the potential to contribute to Sixth Form teaching depending on experience and interest. The English curriculum is carefully sequenced and has been refined over time to ensure strong progression in reading, writing, and analytical skills.

At Key Stage 3, students study a broad and balanced curriculum that introduces them to a wide range of literary forms, genres, and voices. The department places particular emphasis on developing students’ vocabulary, sentence structure, and confidence in extended writing from an early stage.

At GCSE, the focus is on helping students become confident, independent thinkers who can write with clarity and precision. Teachers use shared approaches to modelling, paragraph structure, and exam-style responses, while still having the flexibility to bring texts to life through discussion, drama, and creative tasks.

Where Sixth Form teaching is involved, students are encouraged to engage deeply with texts, develop sophisticated written arguments, and explore wider critical perspectives. A-Level English is well supported, with students benefiting from close teacher guidance and strong pastoral support.

The English Department

The English department is a stable, experienced team with a strong culture of collaboration. Teachers work closely together to plan lessons, moderate work, and share best practice. Schemes of work and resources are centrally stored and regularly reviewed, helping to reduce workload and ensure consistency across classes.

Department meetings are purposeful and focused on pedagogy rather than paperwork. There is a shared understanding of what effective English teaching looks like, particularly around modelling, feedback, and literacy development.

Enrichment is meaningful and manageable. The department supports reading initiatives, creative writing opportunities, theatre visits, and spoken language activities where appropriate, all aligned closely to curriculum aims rather than added on unnecessarily.

The School

This is a Good school with a strong reputation locally for its academic standards, calm learning environment, and inclusive ethos. The school serves a mixed community and places high value on fairness, consistency, and positive relationships.

Behaviour is well managed through clear systems that are consistently applied by staff. Students are generally polite, engaged, and respectful, allowing lessons to remain focused and purposeful. Senior leaders are visible and supportive, and teachers are not left to manage challenging situations alone.

Pastoral care is well structured, with clear lines of support for both students and staff. Tutors, heads of year, and pastoral teams work closely to support attendance, wellbeing, and academic progress.

Facilities and Resources

The English department is based in a dedicated area of the school, with classrooms designed to support discussion, reading, and writing. Teaching spaces are well maintained and equipped with interactive screens and visualisers, allowing teachers to model writing and annotate texts effectively.

The school library plays an active role in supporting literacy and reading for pleasure. Students are encouraged to read widely, and English teachers work closely with library staff to promote reading across the school.

Digital resources are used thoughtfully to support learning rather than replace it. Shared online folders provide access to lesson materials, assessments, and exemplar responses, ensuring consistency and saving planning time.

Professional Development

Professional development is a key strength of the school. Teachers have access to a structured CPD programme that balances whole-school priorities with subject-specific development. English teachers are encouraged to engage with current research around literacy, feedback, and curriculum design.

Opportunities for peer observation and professional dialogue are built into the school calendar, and staff are encouraged to reflect on their practice in a supportive, non-judgemental environment.

For those interested in progression, there are opportunities to take on additional responsibility within the department or to contribute to whole-school literacy initiatives. Career development is supported at a sustainable pace, without pressure to progress before teachers feel ready.

Workload and Staff Wellbeing

The school takes a sensible and realistic approach to workload. Marking policies are designed to be impactful rather than time-consuming, and data collection is limited to what genuinely supports teaching and learning.

Leadership actively seeks staff feedback and is open to reviewing practices where they create unnecessary pressure. This has contributed to good staff retention and a positive working culture.

Staff describe the school as professional, supportive, and well organised — a place where teachers can focus on teaching rather than constant change.

The Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will:

  • Hold QTS (or be eligible for QTS)

  • Have strong subject knowledge in English Language and Literature

  • Be confident teaching across KS3 and KS4 (KS5 desirable but not essential)

  • Value structured planning and collaborative working

  • Be committed to developing literacy and student confidence

  • Maintain high expectations for behaviour and achievement

  • Be reflective, organised, and enthusiastic about professional development

This role would suit an experienced English teacher looking for a stable and well-led school, or a developing teacher ready to deepen their practice within a supportive department.

Why Join This School?

  • A strong, collaborative English department

  • Calm classrooms and consistent behaviour systems

  • Supportive leadership and realistic workload expectations

  • Clear curriculum vision and shared resources

  • A welcoming school community in a well-connected North Yorkshire location

Application

If you are a Teacher of English seeking a January 2026 move to a school where professional trust, collaboration, and high-quality teaching are genuinely valued, we would be delighted to receive your CV.
