A GCE English Literature (2016 Specification) examiner will mark candidates’ responses in accordance with the pre‑defined mark scheme while adhering to the conditions of recognition and examination procedures. Most subjects will be marked onscreen using ePEN and can be done from home. A few subjects are still marked in the traditional paper‑script method. A high level of subject knowledge is necessary to apply the mark scheme. Each examiner receives an agreed allocation of scripts. Although the examiner is not required to read all texts in the specification, they will be assigned to a specific group of questions and must be thoroughly familiar with all texts attached to those groups. Many of these texts are well‑known and widely taught, and extensive support will be provided during training and the exam series itself.
