About the Service

Nottingham City Council is investing significantly in its Building Control Service, making this an exciting time to join us.

We are embarking on a major programme of growth, doubling the size of our Building Control team to meet increasing demand, strengthen resilience and provide an even better service to the people, businesses and developers of Nottingham. This investment reflects our commitment to public safety, regulatory excellence and delivering a modern, customer-focused Building Control service.

As a Local Authority Building Control team, our primary focus is protecting people and places. Every day, our Registered Building Inspectors play a critical role in ensuring buildings are safe, accessible, sustainable and compliant with Building Regulations. Our work directly contributes to safer homes, schools, hospitals, workplaces and public buildings across the city.

Alongside our growth programme, we are investing in new technology and digital tools that will enable our inspectors to work more efficiently, spend more time adding value on site and reduce administrative burdens. We are also delivering an extensive learning and development programme, supporting staff to maintain and expand their competencies in an increasingly complex regulatory environment.

We are committed to developing the next generation of building control professionals through our "grow your own" approach. Significant investment is being made in apprenticeships, mentoring and career development, creating opportunities for experienced surveyors to help shape and influence the future of the profession.

If you're looking for a role where your expertise is valued, your professional development is supported, and your work genuinely makes a difference to the safety of communities, we'd love to hear from you.

About the Role:

This is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced Class 2F Registered Building Inspector to play a leading role in the future of Building Control in Nottingham.

As a Principal Building Control Surveyor, you will be one of the senior technical specialists within our growing service, leading on some of the city's most complex and challenging projects. From significant commercial developments to higher-risk and complex buildings, you will use your expertise to help ensure that construction across Nottingham meets the highest standards of safety and compliance.

The role offers the opportunity to influence service development, mentor and support fellow surveyors, and help build the capability of our expanding team. You will work closely with senior leaders, developers, design teams and construction professionals, providing trusted technical advice and helping to shape quality development across the city.

We recognise the value that experienced RBIs bring. In return, you will join a service that is investing heavily in technology, professional development and workforce growth, giving you the resources and support needed to focus on what you do best.

If you are looking for a role where you can apply your technical expertise, lead by example, and make a meaningful contribution to public safety and service improvement, we would welcome your application.

About You:

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A Registered Building Inspector (minimum Class 2F) with a proven ability to assess complex applications, inspect high-risk buildings and make sound technical decisions that protect public safety.
  • A natural leader and mentor who can provide technical guidance to colleagues, support the development of junior surveyors and confidently deputise for the Building Control Manager when required.
  • A commercially aware and customer-focused professional with experience building strong client relationships, supporting business growth, managing competing priorities and delivering high-quality outcomes.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to undertake site inspections and attend meetings as required. This post is covered by the statutory duty under Part 7 of the Immigration Act (2016) (English Language Requirement for public sector workers) and therefore the ability to speak fluent English, is an essential requirement for the role.

You can find the job description for this post .

At Nottingham City Council we believe that work is what you do, not where you do it. We offer different working arrangements, depending on the role, including hybrid working. Further information on Worker Types and what these mean in terms of how and where you work can be found on the for applicants page.
