Job Description

Overview

We are seeking Assistant Project Managers to join our team and support the successful delivery of highways and local transport projects across their full lifecycle. This is an excellent opportunity to build your career within a leading consultancy, working on meaningful infrastructure programmes that improve how people move through places and communities.

Working alongside experienced project managers and multidisciplinary technical teams, you will gain broad exposure to project delivery while developing the confidence and capability to take on increasing responsibility. You will play a visible role in coordinating projects, engaging stakeholders and helping teams deliver high-quality outcomes for clients.

We know that different people have different priorities, which is why we're here to support you, with flexible and remote working a central part of our culture. So, talk to us about what's ideal for you - from reduced weeks to buying more leave over school holidays. And if you're returning from a career break, ask us how we can help you transition back into work with us.

Our Transportation Division is currently seeking Assistant Project Managers in our Glasgow and Edinburgh offices to support the delivery of a wide variety of multi-disciplinary highways projects within Scotland and the rest of the UK and Republic of Ireland. Using your excellent people, multi-disciplinary technical and delivery skills, you'll drive a variety of civil and structural designs for new build, renewal, maintenance and assessment works.

You'll be part of one of the largest transportation consultancies in the UK, and a leading supplier of engineering services to government, regulatory and local authorities, infrastructure owners and operators. Major clients include Transport Scotland, Various Local Authorities, Network Rail, Train Operating Companies, Design & Build Contractors and other niche clients. We are looking to grow our project management / highways delivery and supervision capability in Scotland, from where you will also have the opportunity to work with our internationally based design teams.

This role is ideally suited to someone with early project management or project support experience in infrastructure, engineering or transport who is ready to take the next step in their career and broaden their experience across scope, schedule, cost and quality management.

You will be supported to develop your skills while working across multiple tasks, maintaining project information, tracking actions and helping delivery teams meet programme, budget and quality expectations.

Your role

  • Support the planning and delivery of highways and local transport projects in line with agreed scope, programme, budget and quality objectives.
  • Maintain project controls, including schedules, action trackers, risk registers, cost data and reporting packs.
  • Coordinate inputs from multidisciplinary teams and support the timely delivery of high-quality outputs.
  • Prepare progress updates, meeting records, change documentation and other client-facing materials.
  • Monitor delivery performance, identify emerging issues and support the implementation of appropriate corrective actions.
  • Develop effective working relationships with clients, stakeholders and internal teams to support successful project outcomes.

About you

Essential
  • BEng / MEng or MSc degree in civil engineering or equivalent.
  • Actively working towards achieving CEng or IEng with the Institution of Civil Engineers (preferably).
  • Good understanding of relevant design standards, including Eurocodes and those of the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges and Manual for Streets.
  • Preparation of reports.
  • Preparing works packages, including bills of quantities, specifications and construction drawings.
  • Assisting with the resolution of engineering problems.
  • Able to ensure tasks are carried out within agreed timescales and budgets.
  • Assisting site supervision of highway improvement schemes.
  • Excellent communicator with the desire to take on extra responsibilities and keep on developing your skills and our team.
  • Understanding of Project Governance and Development Processes for Transport Scotland and / or Local Authorities.
  • Ability to research information and data without supervision and ability to find solutions to complex problems.
  • Sound interpersonal skills and ability to converse with a wide range of Clients and colleagues across a number of engineering disciplines.
  • Experience of CDM Regulations.
  • Excellent spoken and written English.

Desirable
  • Experience supporting highways, local authority or wider transport infrastructure projects.
  • Progress towards, or interest in pursuing, a recognised project management qualification such as APM, PRINCE2 and NECReg.
