Job description

Are you passionate about higher education and eager to make a meaningful impact on the future of students and the community? The University is seeking new Governors to support and shape the strategic direction of this dynamic, forward-thinking institution.

About the role

As a Governor, you will work alongside a committed team of professionals from diverse sectors, contributing to the University's mission of excellence, innovation, and inclusion. You will be part of a supportive environment led by the Vice-Chancellor, and have opportunities to engage directly with students, staff, and stakeholders. The role of Governor is not remunerated.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Collaborating with fellow Governors to guide the University’s strategic ambitions.
  2. Joining one of the following committees: Finance, Development & Resources; Audit & Risk; People & Remuneration; or Academic Assurance.
  3. Contribute to discussions on educational and financial sustainability, risk management, and governance effectiveness.

Experience in one or more the following areas would be highly valued:

  1. Higher Education: Experience in university-level education and understanding of the UK higher education landscape.
  2. International: Knowledge of global education systems and international partnerships.
  3. Digital: Experience in digital transformation within education.
  4. Commercial: Understanding of business initiatives in the education sector.
  5. Entrepreneurial: Proactive mindset with the ability to foster innovation and new ventures.

What’s in it for you?

  1. Contribute to the University’s life-changing purpose, making a difference to the local communities across the University’s locations in Sunderland, London, and Hong Kong.
  2. Be part of a dynamic and forward-thinking University, committed to student success, innovation, and contributing positively to the wider community.
  3. Help to shape the University’s position within national and international education and through its research activity.
  4. Be directly involved in a wide range of activities, including graduation ceremonies, degree shows, student events and strategic planning days.
  5. Benefit from ongoing training and professional development opportunities to develop your personal and professional skills, knowledge, and experience.

How to apply

If you are interested in becoming a governor and joining the University’s vibrant, collaborative environment, please send your CV and a covering letter outlining your motivation for applying, as well as your skills, knowledge and experience, to: talent.acquisition@sunderland.ac.uk no later than midnight on 30 April 2025.

Should you have any questions about the role, feel free to reach out, and we would be happy to arrange an informal conversation with Andrea Walters, Chief Operating Officer (and Clerk to the Board of Governors).
