We are a technology business operating in the global energy sector. ENSEK designs and develops software that enables energy retailers to manage their energy consumers. ENSEK’s Ignition platform is a SaaS tool that provides energy suppliers with the tech to manage energy consumers - from quote to sign up, billing, collection, and service, all in real-time.

Role Summary

As an Engineering Manager in the Core Services Team you will play a key role in supporting our community of engineers across our product engineering function to work smarter and remove unnecessary barriers. You will support the Core Services Team in making key decisions on priorities and be a key advocate across engineering for the work that is delivered in this team and the value it brings. As a leader within the Tribe, you will play a core role in developing our people, enabling them to grow and progress as individuals as we scale the tribe over the coming months. Key Responsibilities

  • Reporting to a Head of Architecture, the Engineering Manager is responsible for the quality, speed and sustainability of software that is delivered. They manage delivery timelines, schedule expectations and tracking progress to ensure the Product/s are delivered within scope, to time and cost. The Engineering Manager may be responsible for multiple squads.
  • Working in partnership with the Architecture and Platform teams to manage engineering delivery timescales and scheduling expectations, having a view of the burndown and cadence within teams.
  • Tracking monitoring and reporting on the technical debt to ensure the Product/s are delivered within scope, to time and cost.
  • Intuitively understanding where the technical debt is within the squad, taking action to ensure that this is understood and prioritised alongside other pressing demands.
  • Driving a positive culture of engagement and always presenting a “glass half full” attitude, removing the obstacles in the way and ensuring a positive and engaged team.
  • Ensuring that the squad follows the Ways of Working that have been agreed within your Retros and any Guilds to optimise their performance and output.
  • Working with the Engineering Management Chapter to adopt tools and methodologies, driving efficiencies within the squads.
  • Ensuring the squad engineering team is aligned with an agreed and maintained checklist of “things to consider” and take an active interest in seeing how these principles have been applied.
  • Collaborating with the Architects, Principal Engineer, and Product Owners to understand the technical detail which provides an awareness of the risks and allows the necessary support needed to support engineers and testers so they can make safe mistakes, and learn, but avoid the more serious ones.
  • Working with the other teams to achieve a transparent, open, and honest culture, where the Product and Engineering skills work extremely well together, communicating as one team.
  • Managing all the ceremonies of the team - from stand-up to refinement and retro; efficiently and in a constructive and engaging way.
  • Providing line management, coaching, and mentoring of the Engineering teams which includes timely completion of performance reviews and PDPs.
  • Managing augmented, remote squads, working closely with delivery partners to develop strong working relationships, embed ENSEK ways of working and driving a united team mindset.
  • Adding value to the experience of our clients, colleagues and other relevant stakeholders through practicing and promoting the ENSEK values.

Technical Skills

  • Accuracy and attention to detail is key.
  • Demonstrable ability to manage, coach, support, and direct distributed teams.
  • Solid experience in all aspects of line management and pastoral care.
  • Experience in managing and delivering projects, prioritising to ensure alignment with delivery timelines.
  • Internal client focused approach, utilising knowledge, and experience, demonstrating outstanding levels of diplomacy and tact.
  • Experience working with senior high performing engineers.
  • Experience of working in Software or Platform Engineering with agile tools and techniques is a must.
  • Experience from the Energy/Utilities sector would be a real positive.

Soft Skills

  • Excellent communicator with the ability to listen, collaborate and influence others.
  • Proven experience of interfacing with technology leaders across an organisation.
  • A problem solver who can facilitate timely decisions.
  • Values the importance of teamwork, with experience of working in a remote team being essential.
  • Proven ability to engage with and develop strong relationship with internal customers and stakeholders.
