The Security Protection Officer role is responsible for ensuring operational excellence, whilst maintaining a high standard of security and protection. The Security Protection team operates in all Terminal landside areas around Heathrow Airport and undertakes Security patrols both inside and outside of the terminal building whilst still supporting security operations in airside areas on an ad-hoc or during a critical event.
At the heart of the role is Heathrow’s security triangle: Safety, Protect, Serve, and Grow. Every Security Protection Officer is expected to balance all four priorities at all times—keeping people safe, protecting the airport environment, delivering excellent service to passengers and colleagues, and continually developing skills and capability.
The role requires confident, dynamic decision‑making and the ability to prioritise effectively in a fast‑paced, ever‑changing environment. Whether responding to an evacuation, managing an emerging incident, or supporting wider operational activity, Security Protection Officers must act quickly, professionally, and proportionately—ensuring security and protection are never compromised.
Working as part of a highly visible and collaborative team, you will respond to the needs of passengers and stakeholders with professionalism and empathy. The role can be challenging and, at times, pressurised, involving interaction with vulnerable or aggressive individuals. Officers must be adaptable in their approach, using structured questioning techniques (full training provided) to assess situations that others may find difficult.
To succeed, Security Protection Officers must demonstrate strong judgement, resilience, and excellent verbal and written communication skills. Physical capability, customer focus, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are essential. Above all, you must have outstanding observational skills, attention to detail, and a genuine commitment to keeping Heathrow safe for everyone.
