Youth Behaviour Mentor

Start Date: September 2026
Contract Type: Full-Time | Term Time Only
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience
Potential for Permanent Contract

Make a Difference Every Day

Are you passionate about supporting young people to overcome barriers and achieve their full potential? Do you have the resilience, empathy, and dedication to help children with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs thrive both academically and personally?

We are seeking a dedicated Youth Behaviour Mentor / Teaching Assistant to join our supportive and welcoming school community from September. This is an exciting opportunity to work closely with pupils who require additional behavioural and emotional support, helping them engage positively with education and develop essential life skills.

For the right candidate, there is the opportunity for this role to progress into a longer-term or permanent position.

About the Role

As a Youth Behaviour Mentor, you will play a key role in supporting pupils with SEMH needs both inside and outside the classroom. You will work alongside teachers, pastoral staff, and senior leaders to create a positive learning environment where every child feels valued, supported, and able to succeed.

No two days are the same, and while the role can be challenging at times, it is incredibly rewarding for those who are passionate about making a lasting impact on young people's lives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 and small group support to pupils with SEMH needs.
  • Build positive, trusting relationships with young people to encourage engagement and personal development.
  • Support pupils in managing their emotions, behaviour, and social interactions.
  • Assist teachers in delivering engaging lessons and supporting learning activities.
  • Help promote positive behaviour strategies across the school.
  • Support pupils to remain focused and engaged during lessons.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of behaviour support plans.
  • Encourage pupils to achieve their academic targets and personal goals.
  • Work collaboratively with teaching staff, pastoral teams, parents, and external agencies where required.
  • Record observations, progress, and incidents in line with school policies.
  • Act as a positive role model, demonstrating patience, consistency, and professionalism at all times.

What We're Looking For

We are looking for candidates who:

  • Have a genuine passion for supporting children and young people.
  • Are proactive, enthusiastic, and able to use their initiative.
  • Possess strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Can remain calm, patient, and resilient when faced with challenging situations.
  • Have experience working with children, young people, or vulnerable individuals (school-based experience is desirable but not essential).
  • Have an understanding of SEMH needs, behavioural challenges, or trauma-informed approaches (desirable).
  • Are committed to helping pupils achieve both academically and emotionally.
  • Can work effectively as part of a team while also being confident working independently

Important Information

Working with children with SEMH needs can present challenges, and successful candidates must be prepared to support pupils who may display behaviours that challenge. However, the school is committed to providing staff with the training, resources, and support needed to succeed in the role.

This position is subject to an enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references.

If you are passionate about supporting young people, helping them overcome barriers, and making a real difference in their educational journey, we would love to hear from you.
