Job description

Through a holistic approach to education, the school ensures that every student feels valued, included, and supported to achieve their personal best.

The school is seeking an enthusiastic, compassionate, and dedicated Sports Coach to work with students with SEND and SEMH needs. The successful candidate will deliver engaging and inclusive sports sessions, adapting activities to meet the individual abilities and needs of students while creating a safe, positive environment where they can flourish both physically and emotionally.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver engaging, inclusive sports sessions tailored to the individual needs of students with SEND and SEMH requirements.
  • Adapt coaching methods and activities to ensure all students can participate, regardless of their physical, emotional, or cognitive needs.
  • Create a positive and encouraging team environment that supports confidence, resilience, and emotional wellbeing.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, and wider support teams to ensure activities complement students’ Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
  • Monitor student progress, provide constructive feedback, and celebrate individual achievements.
  • Use sport and physical activity as a tool to support emotional regulation, social development, communication, and self-esteem.
  • Build strong, trusting relationships with students by understanding their individual needs and providing consistent support.
  • Ensure all activities are delivered safely and in accordance with safeguarding and health and safety procedures.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Relevant sports coaching qualifications or a degree in Physical Education, Sports Science, or a related field.
  • Additional training or qualifications relating to SEND and/or SEMH would be highly desirable.

Experience

  • Previous experience coaching, teaching, or supporting children and young people with SEND and/or SEMH needs is preferred.
  • Experience adapting activities to support a range of abilities would be advantageous.

Skills

  • Ability to adapt coaching techniques to meet a variety of physical, emotional, and behavioural needs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a patient, supportive, and understanding approach.
  • Strong understanding of safeguarding procedures and commitment to student welfare.
  • Creative and enthusiastic approach to engaging students in sport and physical activity.

Personal Qualities

  • Empathetic and understanding approach towards students facing additional challenges.
  • Positive, flexible, and resilient attitude.
  • A proactive and energetic individual who is willing to get involved and lead by example.
  • Passionate about using sport to promote inclusion, confidence, and wellbeing.
