Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) – Full-Time Opportunity

Location: Southampton
Start Date: September 2026

Contract Type: Full-Time

Primary schools across Southampton are seeking enthusiastic, experienced, and dedicated Higher Level Teaching Assistants (HLTAs) to join their teams from September on a full-time basis.

This is an excellent opportunity for a confident HLTA looking to take on a varied and rewarding role, supporting teaching and learning across the primary age range. Opportunities are available within supportive and welcoming primary schools, providing classroom cover, delivering planned lessons, and working closely with teachers to ensure pupils achieve their full potential.

The Role

As a Full-Time HLTA, you will:

  • Deliver pre-planned lessons across the primary age range in the absence of the class teacher
  • Provide high-quality PPA and short-term classroom cover when required
  • Support teachers in planning, preparing, and delivering engaging learning activities
  • Work with individual pupils and small groups to raise attainment and support progress
  • Adapt learning activities to meet the needs of all pupils, including those with SEND
  • Create a positive, inclusive, and stimulating learning environment
  • Manage classroom behaviour effectively in line with school policies
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, teaching assistants, and parents to support pupil development
  • Assist with assessing and monitoring pupil progress where appropriate
  • Contribute positively to the wider school community

Requirements

  • HLTA qualification or equivalent experience is desirable
  • Experience working within a primary school setting
  • Confidence leading whole-class learning independently
  • Strong classroom and behaviour management skills
  • A flexible, proactive, and positive approach
  • The ability to build positive relationships with pupils and staff
  • A genuine passion for supporting children's learning and development
