Job description

We’re a proudly Northern charity that provides tutoring in schools on a not-for-profit basis. Our mission is to transform lives through tutoring – we offer subsidised, high-quality tutoring to young people who might otherwise not have access to a tutor, to support them to unlock their potential.

Working directly in partnership with Primary and Secondary schools across the Greater Manchester, Merseyside, and Leeds-Bradford city regions, we support pupils in Maths, English, and Science. We also work in Alternative Provision (AP) settings and with Looked After Children (LAC).

About the role

  • You’ll tutor in Secondary Science.
  • You’ll plan and deliver tuition for groups of up to three pupils.
  • You’ll form impactful relationships with pupils over the course of a tuition assignment (usually 15 weeks).
  • You will work on a self-employed basis.
  • Tutoring usually takes place during the school day on the school premises.

What we’re offering

Make a difference in young people’s lives across the North. As a tutor, you’ll:

  • Earn £21 minimum to plan and deliver each hour of tuition.
  • Work with small groups of pupils – either 1:1 or 1:3.
  • Gain key teaching skills from our core tutor training programme (which is delivered online and takes 10-15 hours to complete).
  • Have access to ongoing support and Continued Professional Development (CPD) opportunities.
  • Work on a self-employed basis.

What we’re looking for

  • At least three hours’ availability a week to deliver tutoring.
  • For Secondary tutors, a grade of A/7 in the relevant GCSE subject (or equivalent). Extenuating circumstances will be considered.
  • Willingness to undergo an enhanced DBS check, provided and paid for by The Tutor Trust.
  • Ability to register as self-employed in the UK. Read our FAQs if you’re unsure about your eligibility to do so.
  • No teaching experience is required but you should demonstrate a commitment to our mission, a love of your chosen subject, and a passion for helping others.

Resources and support

  • Read our application and training FAQs.
  • Follow our blog on perfecting your application.
  • Hear from Farhan, one of our Manchester tutors.
  • Email us for any further questions: recruitment@thetutortrust.org.

Disclaimer: For advice about working for yourself please check the guidance on the HMRC government website.

The Tutor Trust is committed to safeguarding and takes its responsibility seriously. It is a legal requirement that all our tutors have an enhanced DBS check on the update service (which would be paid for by The Tutor Trust). It is an offence to apply for a role if you are barred from engaging in regulated activity relevant to children. You can read our full child protection and safeguarding policies and practices on our website. [https://www.thetutortrust.org/safeguarding]
