SCOTTISH GOVERNMENT

Lead Automation Developer

Reference: 2023-7781

Salary GBP £56,020.00/Per Annum Pay Supplement GBP £5,000.00/Per Annum

Overview

Would you like to work for a large, operational and delivery focussed Directorate at the forefront of key Scottish Government priorities and play a pivotal role in the delivery and management of complex Robotic Process Automation (RPA) & automated solutions, applying knowledge of a variety of methods in support of automation initiatives across Scottish Government and the wider public sector?

The newly formed Automation Team has a vacancy for a Lead Automation Developer to play a key part in managing agile projects within a portfolio and supporting other members of the team in the development and delivery of AI powered automated solutions.

Corporate Transformation is a new Directorate established to increase the Scottish Government’s capacity and capability to shape and deliver transformational corporate change, with impact across the wider public sector. The Directorate will bring structure and governance to the setting of priorities, and manage the delivery of many key projects and programmes.

As Lead Automation Developer, you will lead on collaboration with senior stakeholders and end users throughout the project lifecycle, from the identification of automation opportunities, through to the design, development, testing and maintenance of automations, employing process optimisation techniques and the use of LEAN/agile methodologies where required. You will also be responsible for overseeing the development team in investigation and resolution of defects, Technical Debt and the management of Change Requests relating to Applications deployed within the CoE’s production environment and create monitoring/control mechanisms to manage these.

You will lead on quality assurance across the technical platform suites, contributing to Service Design of the ACoE and coaching the development team to ensure best practices are adhered to, to ensure automations meet business requirements and stated targets for efficiency and finally to ensure that automated processes are scalable where possible. You will evaluate the effectiveness of the automation framework and develop contingencies concerning the integration of automation and applied technologies.

The Lead Automation Developer is responsible for defining ways of working, training and promote adoption of maintaining standards within the development team. You will oversee and review other people’s design and development thinking; making sure the most appropriate technology is selected and ensuring efficient use of resources.

This is an exciting opportunity to work as part of a motivated, collaborative and supportive team, where you will have the opportunity to develop your technical & managerial skill-set, and lead in building the Scottish Government’s Automation Centre of Excellence development team.

  • Apply a strategic mind-set to Automation, seeking commonality in processes and patterns, armed with the latest tools and technology to lead decision making around automated solutions

  • Oversee and advise on the design, build, testing and deployment of automation process solution; defining process and technical solutions, prototyping, configuring digital components, and collaborating with stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle

  • Identify and manage obstacles to help the team to overcome them whilst balancing multiple priorities, finding ways to improve system robustness, resilience and stability

  • Define control mechanisms and oversight of the prioritisation, investigation and resolution of issues and change requests in the production environment

  • Work with the technical architect and Senior management team to formulate long-term development strategy and ensure quality assurance

  • Demonstrate strong stakeholder management and engagement, encouraging and facilitating continuous improvement

  • Define and coach the team to instil best practice standards for the delivery of automated solutions within the Scottish Public Sector as part of the CoE
