About HF Mencap:HF Mencap is a local charity supporting people with learning disabilities, autism and other support needs, as well as their families and carers. We work to reduce inequality, increase opportunities, and ensure local people are supported to live the lives they choose.
About the Role:
As a Support Worker, you’ll support people at our centre and out in the local community, helping them build skills, confidence, friendships and independence through meaningful activities.
This is a brilliant role if you’re interested in social care, community support, disability support, autism support, wellbeing, or working in a values-led charity.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Person-centred support: enabling people to make choices and take the lead in their own lives
  • Activity support: supporting people to take part in a wide range of sessions such as:
  • Health & wellbeing programmes.
  • Digital skills / IT sessions.
  • Community outings and social activities (cinema, bowling etc).
  • Swimming and fitness activities.
  • Personal care: where required, always in a respectful, dignified way
  • Community inclusion: supporting people to build relationships and feel part of their community
  • Record keeping & communication: writing daily notes, updating plans, sharing key information with the team
  • Safety & safeguarding: following risk assessments, health & safety guidance, and safeguarding procedures
  • Teamwork: working closely with colleagues, families, carers, and external professionals.

You Must Be:
  • Reliable and consistent – you understand that familiar, dependable support helps people feel safe, confident and valued.
  • A confident communicator – you can build trust, listen well and develop positive relationships with the people we support, their families and colleagues.
  • Calm, patient and resilient – you can remain positive and professional when situations are challenging or unpredictable.
  • Open to learning and feedback – you’re willing to develop your skills, ask questions and learn from experience.
  • Kind, respectful and person-centred – you see the individual, not their disability, and treat everyone with dignity.
  • Organised and responsible – you understand the importance of accurate record keeping, following support plans and communicating important information.
  • Positive and proactive – you’re willing to encourage people to try new things, develop their skills and get involved in their community.

Essential:Due to the nature of the role, you must be able to:
  • Safely support individuals during swimming activities, using appropriate equipment, training and reasonable adjustments.
  • Safely support individuals with wheelchair mobility, including manoeuvring wheelchairs where required, using appropriate equipment and following relevant training.

Training & Benefits:
  • Comprehensive Training: We provide full induction and ongoing training, including safeguarding, health & safety, positive behaviour support, and person-centred planning.
  • Enhanced DBS Check: HF Mencap covers the cost of your enhanced DBS check.
  • Vaccination Encouragement: We strongly encourage all colleagues to receive the Covid-19 vaccine to safeguard each other and the individuals we support.
  • Career Development: Opportunities for professional development and progression within HF Mencap.
  • Supportive Environment: Join a diverse, inclusive team that values each individual’s unique strengths and perspectives.

How to Apply:
  • Check Commutability: Ensure you can reliably travel to Addison Gardens, London W14 0DT.
  • Submit Your CV & Cover Letter: Highlight any relevant experience (e.g. support work, teaching, swimming) and why you’re passionate about this role.
  • Interview & Induction: Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview; successful applicants will begin a structured induction and training programme.

Equal Opportunities:HF Mencap is committed to equality, diversity and inclusion and welcomes volunteers from all sections of the community. We are committed to creating an environment where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.
Join our welcoming, diverse, and inclusive team committed to making a positive impact.
