SEN Teaching Assistant

SEN Teaching Assistant
Full-Time September 2026 Start Mainstream Primary School Newham

Are you an experienced SEN Teaching Assistant looking for a rewarding full-time role where you can make a genuine difference to the lives of children with Special Educational Needs?

A welcoming and inclusive mainstream primary school in Newham is looking to appoint a dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant to join their team from September 2026. This full-time, long-term role involves providing 1:1 support for a pupil with Special Educational Needs, helping them to thrive both academically and socially.

The school is seeking a confident, resilient, and patient individual who can build strong relationships, provide consistent support, and become a positive role model both inside and outside of the classroom.

This SEN Teaching Assistant position is ideal for candidates with experience supporting pupils with Autism (ASC), ADHD, SEMH, speech and language needs, or behavioural difficulties, who are passionate about helping children achieve their full potential.

The Role

As a SEN Teaching Assistant, you will work on a 1:1 basis, supporting a pupil throughout the school day. You will help them access learning, develop confidence, improve their social and emotional skills, and engage positively within the classroom.

Working closely with the class teacher and SENCO, you will implement personalised learning strategies while promoting independence, emotional regulation, and positive behaviour.

Responsibilities

  • Provide dedicated 1:1 support for a pupil with Special Educational Needs.
  • Build a positive, trusting, and consistent relationship with your assigned pupil.
  • Act as a calm, patient, and encouraging role model.
  • Support pupils with Autism (ASC), ADHD, SEMH, speech and language needs, and associated behavioural needs.
  • Deliver personalised interventions and support EHCP outcomes.
  • Encourage emotional regulation, confidence, and positive behaviour strategies.
  • Support learning across EYFS, KS1, or KS2 depending on the school's needs.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, parents, and external professionals.
  • Help pupils develop independence, communication, and social skills both inside and outside the classroom.

About You

To be considered for this SEN Teaching Assistant role, you will have:

  • A minimum of one year's experience supporting children within a school setting.
  • Experience working with pupils with Autism (ASC), ADHD, SEMH, or other Special Educational Needs.
  • Strong behaviour management skills.
  • The ability to build positive relationships and become a consistent role model.
  • A calm, resilient, and proactive approach.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • An Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or willingness to obtain one.

Candidates with backgrounds in youth work, mentoring, sports coaching, behaviour support, youth offending services, care work, or alternative provisions are also encouraged to apply.

The School

This friendly and inclusive mainstream primary school in Newham is committed to ensuring every child receives the support they need to succeed. The school has a strong reputation for its SEND provision and provides a nurturing environment where pupils are encouraged to become confident, independent learners.

You will be joining a supportive leadership team and experienced staff who are committed to ongoing professional development and staff wellbeing, making this an excellent opportunity for anyone looking to build a long-term career in education.

Why Apply?

  • Full-time September 2026 start.
  • Long-term opportunity with the potential for a permanent position.
  • Work within a supportive and inclusive mainstream primary school.
  • Excellent experience for aspiring teachers, educational psychologists, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, and behaviour specialists.
  • Ongoing training and professional development.
  • Make a genuine difference to a child's education, confidence, and wellbeing every day.
