Howden Foundation - Communications & Engagement Lead
Established in 2014, the Howden Foundation is the corporate foundation of Howden, one of the world's leading global insurance groups and the second largest employee-owned business in the UK. The foundation is dedicated to addressing climate change and its impacts, with a focus on the Global South and strategic partnerships to unlock scalable solutions. It supports employee giving and volunteering through the People First Fund and the Howden Foundation Charity Awards.

The Communications and Engagement Lead will drive the development and execution of a global communications strategy, position the foundation as a leading climate adaptation philanthropy, and manage internal communications and stakeholder engagement in coordination with Howden teams to engage colleagues as core donors.
You will join at a pivotal time as the foundation builds its profile within Howden and in the climate and philanthropy sectors. The role involves identifying and managing opportunities to expand reach and raise the profile of the Foundation and its partners.
What will you be doing?
External communications
- Position the foundation as a leading corporate foundation and climate adaptation philanthropy with a strong, credible brand
- Monitor emerging climate, societal and political trends to inform the communications strategy and contribute to thought leadership content
- Manage website and LinkedIn presence; monitor analytics and refine strategy
- Write and publish content across external channels (website, social media)
- Lead the foundation's response to high-risk or reputational issues with timely, strategic guidance
- Support grant partners and external stakeholders with communication materials and advice
- Be the first point of contact for media, coordinating with the CEO for appropriate responses
- Brief and manage delivery of suppliers for design, photography and video / animation
Internal communications & Engagement
Create and maintain the foundation communications toolkit and resources for internal audiencesProduce content that drives employee engagement through storytellingPartner with internal teams to plan and execute activities that engage Howden employees with the foundation's workWork with the Partnerships team to package skills-based volunteering into compelling communicationsAnalyze trends to develop action plans that increase employee engagementCross-cutting activities
Act as the in-house communications advisor to safeguard the narrativeEngage in strategic meetings with stakeholders and partners to advance communications objectivesCollaborate with the CEO, COO and Partnerships team to understand developments and milestonesDevelop and maintain a foundation communications calendar and guidelinesWork with Howden internal teams to align campaignsEvaluate communications impact and refine strategy based on dataAssist with other communications work as requiredWho are we looking for?
We are looking for a dynamic, strategic and creative thinker with experience in developing and delivering communications strategies in a multi-stakeholder environment and a passion for climate action. The ideal candidate will be proactive, hands-on, and comfortable working in a small values-driven team, with curiosity about the full range of Howden Foundation activities.
At least 5 years mid-senior communications experience in corporate and / or internal communications or related fieldKnowledge or interest in climate action and philanthropyExperience developing and implementing communication strategies for diverse stakeholders, including planning, monitoring and evaluationExcellent writing and communication skills; ability to tailor messages to different audiences and channelsExperience with a range of communications tools including digital, social and earned media; media planning and managementStrong organisational and project management skills with the ability to prioritiseCreativity, initiative and problem-solving with ability to work independently and as part of a teamExperience in an employee engagement / communications role is advantageous but not criticalDesirable : basic design skills (Adobe, Canva, PPT) and production management (film, graphics, etc.)Details of appointment
This is a full-time, permanent role; four days a week would be considered for the right candidate. Location is flexible, with a requirement to be in the London office at least one day a week.
