Reed.co.ukRoslin, MidlothianTitle : Research Fellow (Bovine Genomics and Microbiome)
Type : Full-Time, Fixed Term (3.5 Years)
Salary : £39,977 - £43,731 per annum
Location : SRUC Easter Bush, Edinburgh
REF : ACF / AHES / 007 / 23
Closing Date : 3rd September 2023
SRUC is unique in Scotland and one of the largest organisations of its kind in Europe. Our ambitious and exciting vision is to work at local, national and international levels, leading innovation and sustainable development in agriculture and rural sectors.
The Research Fellow will conduct research within Innovate UK project "Climate Smart Beef Genetics - Innovative approaches to reduce the environmental impact of the UK beef supply chain". He / she will be responsible for day-to-day research in this project, which is a collaboration with the world leading breeding company Genus plc. He / she will carry out research to understand the host animal genetic effects on the rumen microbiome genetically linked to methane emissions and feed conversion efficiency using unique omics-data available or generated within the project.
The research will be based on our publications on the bovine microbiome (e.g. Roehe et al. 2016, PLOS Genetics; Stewart et al., 2019, Nature Biotechnology; Martinez-Alvaro et al., 2022) which indicates that rumen microbial genes are highly informative to predict methane emissions and feed conversion efficiency with high potential for implementation in genetic improvement programmes. The research is expected to substantially improve our scientific understanding of the associations between animal genomics and rumen microbiome profiles and their practical application in a breeding programme. A PhD in a field related to Genetics, Bioinformatics and Microbiology is essential, as well as outstanding skills in statistical analyses and animal genetics.
Closing date : 3rd September 2023
Preferred starting date : as soon as possible
