Job description

Job Description

Location- Warrington, Epsom, Glasgow, Oxford, Peterborough, Bristol, Swansea, Birmingham.

Are you into flood risk management and looking for your next exciting opportunity? We are looking for senior flood modellers, to join our thriving business, working on our great projects across the UK. If this is you, we want to hear from you and discuss how we can help you develop your career!

We have recently been named as a Delivery Partner for the Environment Agency’s latest framework - to help better understand the impact of climate change and risk of flooding for communities in England. Under the 2024 Mapping and Modelling Framework AtkinsRéalis will provide the Environment Agency with survey, mapping, modelling, incident management, hydrological and other professional services to help identify and plan for climate events. This is a significant programme that will help the Environment Agency understand better the impact of climate change and reduce the risk of flooding to communities across England, including the vital response required to support communities that have been flooded. The Mapping and Modelling Framework underpins the work of the Environment Agency, enabling it to make informed investment decisions based on data and evidence.

As a result of this and other committed projects, we have vacancies UK wide for enthusiastic and ambitious individuals in a predominantly technical area.

Role : contribute to and lead hydraulic and hydrological modelling projects.

Expertise : Proficiency in 1D and 2D modelling for rivers, surface water, and coastal areas.

Location : Vacancies across the UK.

AtkinsRéalis is a major engineering, environmental and design consultancies AtkinsRéalis offers opportunities for talented consultants to work on a wide variety of projects at a range of scales. We have ongoing projects in flood risk management with a lot of work coming from our frameworks for the Environment Agency and numerous local authorities in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, as well as major projects like HS2 and Sizewell C. We are undertaking projects in natural flood management, flood forecasting, flood alleviation and helping water companies with elements of their water resources and water quality issues. Beyond this, we work internationally and have work committed across the globe, including the Red Sea economic zone, Al Bada developments in the middle east, and EIA work in North America. All our projects are run with our colleagues in India, and you will be working as part of an international team.

Check out some of our recent, most exciting projects.

Requirements :

Our current vacancies are for Associate consultants, engineers and modelers across our primary UK offices, although consideration will be given to exceptional candidates in other locations. You should have experience in delivering flood risk projects with a focus on hydraulic modelling, and the confidence to lead technical work as well as mentor junior team members in developing their skills. You will be able to build strong relationships with our clients with a high degree of collaborative working skills to ensure we get the best from our working relationships with client teams.

  • Experience : Extensive years of experience in flood risk analysis for strategy, planning, development, or design, with demonstrated project delivery and meeting client requirements.
  • Technical Skills : Proficient in 1D-2D modelling using tools like Infoworks ICM, Flood Modeller, TUFLOW / ESTRY, or HEC-RAS. GIS with ArcGIS, MapInfo, or QGIS. Hydrological Assessment is desirable experience with FEH hydrological assessment and UK hydrology.
  • Leadership : Some experience in developing and leading technical teams.
  • Decision-Making : Ability to make robust decisions based on available information.

AtkinsRéalis and its clients value you having a Chartered status at this grade. Whilst we appreciate those without professional memberships, we will help you in obtaining those qualifications through mentoring and development opportunities if you don’t already have them.

We also value a civil engineering design experience to help solve the flooding problems. This is a desirable attribute but not a requirement.

Responsibilities :

  • Technical Work : Conduct detailed technical work, including hydraulic modelling, data analysis, GIS, and technical reporting. Ensure quality assurance for technical deliverables.
  • Leadership and Management : Manage and supervise junior resources. Support project managers and directors by following project procedures, including financial and change control. Actively progress a suite of projects under your control.
  • Collaboration and Integration : Work effectively as part of a team, collaborating with environmental scientists, engineers, and planners. Provide a consistent and integrated service to clients.
  • Business Development : Support business development activities, including tendering for projects and client / stakeholder engagement. Develop and agree on the scope of services, costs, and resources.
  • Team Development : Contribute to the continued development of the Flood Risk Team through active involvement in the technical network.
  • The Individual should :

  • Be motivated : Candidates should be self-driven and committed to achieving technical excellence.
  • Be collaborative : Strong interpersonal skills and effective communication are essential for collaborative work.
  • Be adaptable : Flexibility and a willingness to tackle new challenges are valuable traits.
  • Have good organisational abilities : Candidates should be well-organised and capable of leading multiple projects simultaneously. Recognize opportunities for delegation and the development of team members.
  • Have a good attention to detail : Consistently maintain high standards in your work.
  • Training :

AtkinsRéalis develops individuals through a portfolio of training and development activities designed to help you make the best of your abilities and talents. These are reviewed with individuals through an annual development process. You should be Chartered already for this role although we will support staff with commensurate skills and experience in achieving and maintaining membership of relevant institutions. AtkinsRéalis will support you in your professional development beyond Chartership too, whether with the ICE, CIWEM or others. This includes paying your annual membership, and providing access to CPD. Inside AtkinsRéalis, we recognise different career paths, and so you will have the opportunity to move into client, business or project management if you prefer to move away from your technical roots.

You will also be part of our global Technical Networks, which provide a flow of technically orientated information and ideas through the company. For this role, our Flood Risk Management network will support your learning, but there are many others you could also join.
