Job Summary
The Mental Health Act covers the reception, care and treatment of persons detained with mental disorder. It provides the legislation by which people diagnosed with a mental disorder can be detained in hospital or police custody for their disorder to be assessed or treated or be subject to supervised community treatment. The role of the Mental Health Act Administration Assistant and Partnership Support is first and foremost to provide comprehensive administrative support to the Mental Health Act Administrator. Ability to work without supervision is an important aspect of this post as the position includes covering the duties of the Mental Health Act Administrator in their absence. Lead role in maintaining processes and systems to support compliance with the Mental Health Act and the Code of Practice. Working within a Team the postholder will be responsible for ensuring that the Health Board is fully compliant with all the statutory requirements enforced by the Mental Health Act. Ensuring that all Mental Health Act documentation is correct and up to date, maintaining an accurate filing system and database of patient information.
Main duties of the job
Responsibilities and Duties :
- Develop a sound operational knowledge of the Mental Health Act 1983, including Mental Health Law, Mental Capacity Act and any subsequent legislation.
- Undertake administrative duties relating to the Mental Health Act 1983 which frequently involves communication of highly complex, sensitive or contentious nature. This may be in writing, electronically, by phone and in person, with Hospital Managers, Clinical Staff, Social Services, Healthcare Inspectorate Wales Mental Health Review Services, Mental Health Review Tribunal, Legal Representatives and Advocacy Services. Required to use a sensitive approach where there may be significant barriers to communication.
- Assist with, and lead in the absence of the Mental Health Administrator where necessary, the co‑ordination of Hospital Managers Hearings in the event of an Appeal; ensure that all reports are checked, collated and despatched in accordance with Health Board Policy. Communicate to staff and patients the outcome of the Hearing.
- Assist with, and lead where necessary, the co‑ordination of Mental Health Review Tribunal Hearings, in the event of an Appeal, to ensure that all hospital statements and reports are prepared and despatched within the statutory time‑sensitive deadlines and Mental Health Review Tribunal Rules.
