School Caretaker/ Groundskeeper

We are seeking a reliable and practical Caretaker / Groundskeeper to support the day-to-day maintenance, security, and presentation of a busy school site. This is a hands‑on role suited to someone who takes pride in maintaining safe, clean, and well‑kept environments.

The Role

The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the school premises and grounds are maintained to a high standard, supporting a safe learning environment for pupils, staff, and visitors.

• Carrying out daily site checks and reporting any hazards or defects
• Undertaking basic maintenance and minor repairs across the site
• Maintaining outdoor areas, including litter picking, general grounds upkeep, and seasonal tasks
• Opening and securing buildings, including unlocking/locking and alarm procedures
• Setting up and clearing spaces for school activities, events, or meetings
• Monitoring site security and access, following safeguarding procedures at all times
• Liaising with contractors and reporting larger maintenance issues as required

The Ideal Candidate

• Has previous experience in a caretaking, groundskeeping, or facilities-based role (school experience desirable but not essential)
• Is practical, proactive, and able to work independently
• Has a strong understanding of health & safety and site security
• Is physically fit and comfortable with manual handling tasks
• Is reliable, punctual, and flexible with working hours
• Communicates clearly with staff, visitors, and external contractors

• This role is subject to safeguarding checks in line with current regulations
• Flexibility to support early starts, split shifts, or occasional out-of-hours work may be required
