Lead UX Designer

We are a Sunday Times Top Track 100 company and one of the UK 's fastest growing privately owned companies. The Range has grown enormously since its inception in 1989, and now has over 200 stores nationwide. People are at the heart of our retail concept, and we want to invest in our staff and make the future extraordinary.

As a result of our expansion plans, and our continued ongoing success, we are seeking a dynamic Lead UX Designer to be based at our Head Office in Plymouth.

About the Role:

As a Lead UX Designer, you’ll shape and elevate the digital shopping experience across The Range, wilko, Homebase and the wider multi-brand estate, delivering high-quality, insight-led design at scale. You’ll work end-to-end across the design process using research, data and experimentation to uncover customer pain points, validate solutions and deliver production ready UI, while playing a key role in defining and evolving a multi-brand design system that raises UX maturity across the group. Working closely with product, trading, creative, research, CRO and engineering teams, you’ll influence strategy, balance customer needs with commercial goals, and continuously improve design craft and ways of working in a fast-moving, evolving environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Continuously enhance the online shopping experience for The Range, wilko, Homebase and the wider digital estate
  • Instrumental in shaping a multi-brand design system, implementing standards and raising the maturity level of UX across the group
  • Use data, research, testing and experimentation to uncover pain points and validate solutions that drive commercial performance
  • Deliver refined production-ready UI, prototypes and UX artefacts
  • Collaborate with product, creative and trading teams to deliver strategic initiatives
  • Collaborate with UX research, CRO and developers to drive UX enhancements through experimentation
  • Improve the craft and working practices in collaboration with other designers

Experience & Background

  • 5+ years of experience working in a UX/product design role
  • Previous UX experience with demonstrable outcomes and impact, working in e-commerce, retail or on commercial customer-facing products and services
  • Comfortable working across the end-to-end design process, with strengths in critical thinking, turning research into insights, framing the right problems to solve and producing production-ready UI and artefacts
  • Experience working across multiple brands with different cohorts would be advantageous
  • Familiar with establishing UX standards and design patterns using component libraries and design systems
  • Experience with native apps and a solid understanding of Material 3/Human Interface Guidelines is desirable

Mindset & Behaviours

  • You’re comfortable navigating change and ambiguity
  • You’re able to work autonomously across multiple projects
  • You can build a compelling narrative around your findings and recommendations, that can influence teams and stakeholder decisions
  • You enjoy proactively building relationships with collaborators, wider teams and stakeholders
  • Usability heuristics, universal mental models, UX ideology and toolset proficiency (e.g Figma) should be second nature and enable you to maintain standards while working at pace
  • You’re able to balance the needs of customers with commercial goals, KPIs/OKRs and tech/operational constraints
  • You’re naturally curious and have a strong desire to learn, explore and interrogate things for yourself

Reasons to join

  • Improve experience on a big scale - millions of shoppers across the UK and Ireland could benefit from the work you do
  • The opportunity to raise the bar for UX craft and design at one of the fastest-growing home and garden retailers is up for grabs

This role might not be for you if:

  • You prefer being part of a larger UX team with structured processes
  • You need detailed design briefs or clear insights before you kick off
  • You prefer to design products and experiences from a blank canvas

What we offer:

  • Competitive salary
  • Pension
  • Long service awards
  • Employee discount
  • Cycle to work scheme

Position: Permanent, Full-time

Hours: Monday – Friday, 08:45am – 17:30pm.

Location: Plymouth, Devon
