Role Summary
We are seeking a highly experienced and well-connected Technical Compliance Manager to join our dynamic team. The successful candidate will play a critical role in navigating the complex and evolving landscape of international maritime regulations, with a particular focus on environmental compliance and the transition to alternative fuels. This position requires a proactive individual with deep industry knowledge, exceptional communication skills, and a strategic mindset to assess the impact of regulations on our fleet and future operations.
Requirements
- Regulatory Compliance : Monitor, interpret, and advise on all relevant national and international shipping regulations, including but not limited to IMO conventions (e.g., MARPOL, SOLAS, STCW), EU regulations (e.g., FuelEU Maritime, EU ETS), and flag state requirements
- Alternative Fuels Expertise : Provide in-depth analysis and strategic guidance on the implications of alternative fuels for vessel design, operations, bunkering, and safety. This includes understanding their technical complexities, availability, infrastructure needs, and lifecycle emissions
- Upcoming Regulations & Impact Assessment : Proactively identify and assess the potential impact of forthcoming regulations on the company's existing fleet and future newbuilds, developing strategies for compliance and competitive advantage
- Industry Liaison & Networking : Maintain and expand a strong network within the maritime industry, including regulatory bodies, classification societies, industry associations, technology providers, and academic institutions, to stay abreast of developments and influence policy
- Strategic Advisory : Provide expert advice to senior management and relevant departments on regulatory risks, opportunities, and strategic decisions related to fleet decarbonization and sustainable shipping practices
- Internal Training & Awareness : Develop and deliver training sessions and informational materials to internal teams (e.g., technical, operations, commercial) to ensure a high level of awareness and understanding of current and future regulations
- Documentation & Reporting : Prepare comprehensive reports, briefings, and presentations on regulatory matters for internal and external stakeholders
- 3rd Party Technology Validation : Work with 3rd party data to understand, investigate and question the performance of proposed 3rd party technology solutions
- Technology Development : Contribute to the development of innovative technologies, such as wind-assist propulsion, hull optimization, and energy efficiency devices
- Vessel Performance prediction & Emissions Reduction : Evaluate the impact of technology inclusion on a local and holistic vessel level, modelling the impact of new technologies on fuel consumption and emissions
- Performance Analysis : Analyse hydrodynamic and aerodynamic performance using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results and as well as other empirical methods
- Experimentation & Validation : Design and oversee full-scale trials to validate simulation results and assess real-world performance
- Technology Advisor : Monitor developments in maritime decarbonization technologies and contribute insights to UML's technology strategy
Experience Required
Experience : Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in maritime regulatory affairs, environmental compliance, or a related field within the shipping industryStrong understanding of hydrodynamics, aerodynamics, and vessels performanceStrong proficiency in software tools development and use (Python, C++, Java Script), ideally including exposure to the use of neural networks and other modern machine learning techniquesProficiency in CFD software (ideally, STAR-CCM+) and well as empirical techniquesShip Classification Society Experience (Advantageous) : Previous experience working at a recognized ship classification society is highly advantageousIndustry Connections : Demonstrated strong professional network within the maritime industryAlternative Fuels Knowledge : In-depth knowledge and ability to discuss alternative fuels in detail, including their production pathways, safety considerations, bunkering challenges, and their role in achieving decarbonization targetsRegulatory Foresight : Proven ability to anticipate and understand the implications of upcoming international and regional regulations on vessel design, operations, and fleet managementTechnical Acumen : Strong understanding of ship systems, naval architecture, and marine engineering principles to effectively assess the technical implications of regulations and new technologiesCommunication Skills : Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex regulatory concepts clearly and concisely to diverse audiencesAnalytical & Problem-Solving Skills : Strong analytical capabilities to interpret data, assess risks, and develop practical solutions for regulatory compliance and strategic planningEducation : Bachelor's degree in Maritime Studies, Fluid Dynamics, Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Environmental Science, Law, or a related discipline.
